Acoustic repellent windscreen - Steve Pearce
Needed the windscreen replaced due to crack ('05 Picasso), in trying to source the correct version the supplier asked me if it was of the "acoustic repellent" type. I had no idea! They got me to check for a logo on the lower corner which should look like "an ear and a deflected arrow". Sure enough it was there.

I'd never heard of this before, presumably it is supposed to cut down wind noise?

I have heard of metallised screens that repel sunlight, to some degree, but acoustic repellent is a new one on me! Please keep us posted if you find out what it is all about!
Acoustic repellent windscreen - local yokel
The screen is coated with minute particles that generate a high frequency noise at speeds greater than 15mph.

The noise repels insects - saves you having to scrape them off the screen.

I'll now fetch my coat.

Driving along Harrow Road beside the elevated M40 extension a couple of years ago saw a policeman in a decelerating lane pointing what looked like a large pistol at my car. As I lifted off in haste I heard a distinct double pinging sound, a bit like asdic in a war movie, coming from the corner of the windscreen. No doubt these devices, for which the acoustic repellent windscreenTM must have been developed, has been discussed before in the forum.

'Say goodbye to trigger-happy-cops pinging misery!'

I wouldn't have thought there would be sufficient time when moving at speed for an insect to think, "I wonder what that mildly irritating noise it? Better move out of the way!" before it's splatted on the screen.

A high frequency vibration may serve to loosen water droplets, though.

My new car will apparently have sound deadening sun visors...

Great bragging point in the pub, but how much real difference can it make?
Acoustic repellent windscreen - Hamsafar
I have read about this, it is the laminate middle that is special. I think it was on Pilkington's or Saint Gobain's site.

I have a Citroen C4 there was an option to have acoustic rep' glass. It cuts down on external noise coming into the vehicle. Honest! Look at the Citroen web site and look at the options on the C4.

but that's not "acoustic repellent" it's just "sound insulating". Which doesn't sound half as exciting and, of course, no one has a clue what it is. perfect marketing speak.

If I could have some to fit the passenger in the front seat, I'd pay £5k NOW:-)

Probably just another marketting ploy like solarflect glass, I can't tell the difference at all yet it was a £200 option for original fitment.
I had a purple solarflect for a year and the plain one I had before and after were not warmer. the dashboard was still as hot when parked in the sun etc... Just a gimmick IMHO. I amagine some marketting idiot has read that laminated glass is quieter than normal toughened and giving it a 'value-added' new name.

The Citroen C4 is stated as having "laminated acoustic side windows".

I suspect that the windscreen might be the rain and dirt repellant type,

acoustic windscreens reflect the sound off screen externally,I think to minimise wind noise inside car.something I read but forget where

Reminds me, acoustic windscreen? "Citroen Unplugged"!

" acoustic windscreens reflect the sound off screen externally,I think to minimise wind noise inside car.something"

and that's supposed to be something new?!

And Toyota.

An innovation this year is Toyota's "acoustic windscreen", standard on some models, which offers improved sound absorption thanks to three intermediate layers instead of the single layer of a conventional laminated screen. It seems to work well,

I'll dig out the info when I get into work tomorrow and post it up.

Basically it's an alteration to how the PVB interlayer of the windscreen is made, this reduces the dB into the car from outside.

As promised, its a scan of some dumf using OCR software so please excuse any strange spelling etc.

Acoustic comfort due to SGS dBCONTROL®
Replacing the traditional PVB by a noise damping PVB interlayer (patented by Saint-Gobain Sekurit),
dBCONTROL limits the propagation of low frequency vibrations coming from the engine into the passenger cell. These vibrations are absorbed by the windshield reducing low frequency noises by up to 5 decibels and preventing booming noises from entering the car.
At high speeds the wind generates high frequency noises which enter the car through the windshield as well as the sidelites. SGS dBCONTROL® acoustic glazing reduces this high frequency noise level entering the vehicle by around 8 dB.
SGS dBCONTROL

dBCONTROL is a laminated glazing which offers better noise damping properties than standard laminated glazing due to a specially developed 'Acoustic PVB'.
dBCONTROL is applicable for any laminated glazing (,windshields, backlites and sitelites).

Thanks to it's ability to filter high and low frequency noises,
dBCONTROL acoustic glazing gives the car makers the possibility of controlling/reducing the noise level inside the passenger cell, enhancing the acoustic comfort and the safety of the passengers.

dBCONTROL acoustic glazing can be adapted to all types of vehicles whether they belong to the lower or upper segment, powered by gas or diesel engine. The substitution of the traditional PVB by an acoustic PVB guarantees the best quality/price ratio without increasing the weight of the vehicle.

I assume that PVB is short for Poly(Vinyl Butyral) the inteleaving polymer film?

>>Basically it's an alteration to how the PVB interlayer of the windscreen is made, this reduces the dB into the car from outside.>>

Strikes me as wishful thinking - there are numerous sources for external noise to enter a vehicle.

Years ago we used to cut down some noise by putting thick carpet offcuts under the floor carpets.
