Is it possible to fit different tyre size on the front than are on the back? For example 185/65R14 on the back and 185/60R14 on the front but both with the same speed rating? Is it safe and legal? Thanks

It is possible but not recommended and a mot failure point I believe, completely illegal in Germany.

Doesn't a Lexus (I think the GS (Aristo)) have different size rear tyres to the front?

your insurance company may not be happy if involved in an accident and they use it in mitigating evidence that they played a part in any accident, but its not illegal as you have proposed to put them, and its not an mot failure but it will be advised on the new computor mot and will be flagged on the vosa sheet for your vehicle for evermore,if the mot man spots it which he should.

tyre sizes must be the same on same axle- ie front can have 185/60r14`s and rear could have 185/65R14`s,or vise versa, but not mixed, though its not a good idea to have different sizes for spare wheel reasons

It's certainly NOT an Mot failure as long as both sizes are appropriate to the vehicle (load/speed index). It's only mixing on the same axle that's a failure.
I can't see that it's illegal anywhere, particularly in Germany, as a number of Porsche models have had wider rear tyres than front.
Since "space-saver" spares are legal in the UK, at least to "get you home", it cannot matter if the spare is a different size to the running tyres.

When I had my modified beetle (1973) it ran with 185/55/15 fronts and 185/65/15 rears, and passed every MOT it had.
|
If it's illegal, then how come Hot Rod's and other modified cars have different sized tyres on the front to the back?
As previously mentioned, as long as the same sized tyres are on the same axle then not a problem.

Cars as common as Avantgarde model (and maybe others too) Merc C Class's have different tyre sizes as standard. Mine has 205/55/16 front, 225/50/16 rear.

Sorry, meant to add that you need to maintain the overall diameter otherwise speedo might be affected, and some cars (ie Merc's!) have all sorts of issues with the electronics if they overall diameters vary (so do some 4 WD cars). See www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html

You don't say whether the car you are proposing fitting these to has ABS.
The tyres can quite legally be a different size front to rear, however the sizes you propose have different rolling diameters thus if the car has ABS the ABS light may well be on permanently and ABS will not work.
If these tyre sizes are different to the standard fit for the car, then you should inform your insurance company you have modified the car. If you don't and you are involved in an accident (and the car is inspected), you will find you were not insured.
