Morning all. My Volvo 850 glt auto appeared to have developed a fault in the 'box yesterday. The orahge arrow that lights up when you select any option other than drive in either economy or sport started to flash. The manual states the usual, there is a fault and get it to a dealer. It seemed it would not move off in the lower gears and I think that 3rd was the lowest it would go. However, after a brief stop normality resumed, but the light continued to flash. Any thoughts please. Value of car I suspect is virtually nil although it does us.
Regards.........MD.

Almost certainly the selector has gone. An auto specialist may well be able to take it out and clean it up rather than replace it but it is still a big job as it's difficult to get to.

The ECU has detected a fault and put the box in "limp" mode. Don't jump to conclusions as it could be one of many faults. Take it to a Volvo franchise or Volvo independent and get the electronic diagnostics done.
In "limp" mode it won't change up or down the box as normal but manual selection should still work - 1=1st, 2=2nd, 3/D=3rd.

Thank you Sir. I could do without too much expense right now.

Hello chaps,
Got home from hols and started car and all was fine gear change wise, but flashing arrow still flashing, (well it would wouldn't it!). Her indoors takes it to sainsb' and light goes out and it still changes ok??
One thing I didn't mention on the first report is that we had a mouse or two in the car brought in with bird seed or dog food from a local supplier. AFAIK they are all deaded, trapped and decapitated. (The friendly traps didn't work for those of you who think I am a murderer.) IF, the wiring has been got at would the problem as explained make sense?
Oh hell, I want a T6 anyway!
Regards as always......MD.
