vectra,saab 9-5 rear suspension - gasoil
I have a saab 9-5 with a knock from rear suspension, the springs & dampers have been done and a couple of rose bushes. The knock is still there. The suspension on the 9-5 is identical to the rear of a vectra so cant be that hard to fix! can it? How difficult is the trailing arm bushes? or any other ideas?

Start by getting a proper diagnosis done.

Why have you have specific parts replaced already if they hadn't actually been identified as the cause?

Beware mechanics who say - it's probably the xxxx, it usually is! Just because a fault is more probable doesn't mean that that's the fault you've got.

By checking suspensions in different states of load it should be possible to see where the fault lies. Check for play when the weight is on the wheels, when it's jacked under the body and when it's jacked under the suspension itself.

Also check the other obvious causes like something loose in the boot or under a seat, loose exhaust mountings etc.

I've got an 03 Vectra with a bonkety bonk sound coming from the rear as well, i've renewed the anti-roll bar bushes and checked all shocks, springs etc, about to stick 17 year old son in the boot to try and pinpoint it, driving me mad, if i find it i'll let you know.

A known weak area is (are?) the inner bushes of the horizontal links. Run the rear of the car up onto ramps to keep the suspension loaded then use a big screwdriver or prybar to 'work' the bushes, the failed one is usually obvious. Look for metal-to-metal contact. The bushes can be replaced, do it as a set but does need a bit of specialist tooling.

Well, the bonking on my 03 Vectra turned out to be shock absorber empty of oil, fitted a new pair at £247 (ouch) but the difference is remarkable, no bonking and obviously the ride has improved.

If 03, then will still be under warranty - unless of course it's done more than 60,000 miles?

DD, no its still under warranty apart from ( you guessed it) shockers are only warranted for the first year apparently.
