From the M40 to Telford. Advice reqd - henry k
I will be making the trip fom Surrey to Telford.
I know all the options from home to the M40.
I need advice from the M40 onward.
The route appears to be M42, Toll road ....then?

Is it then onto the M54? Is it obviously signed because my maps are far from clear?

Or onto the A5?

Final destination is approx the junction of the A442 & A6223 NW of Telford.

Are there any difference with the return trip routing?

At present I do not know what time or day I will be doing the trip so I guess avoid week day rush hours or is there more than rush hour traffic.

SWMBO can read OS maps so we can go really agricultural if reqd / recommended.
I do not currently have an OS map of the areas concerned as I rarely venture that far north so I feel a little lost without that trustworthy publication.

Do you mean the A442 and A5223?

Done Telford and Shrewsbury recently, but there are others on here closer, so i'll keep schum.

depends what time of day - you can go down the M42 to bromsgrove Jct 1 and pick up the a442 to telford (its probably about 1hr ish from there). I drive between kidderminster and shrewsbury (bit further on than telford) and can do it in about 45mins (and thats in a terracan!)

its quite a pleasant drive!

Yes. Thanks for pointing out my glitch.

Autoroute is not the clearest source I have ever used.
I have just looked at another map online.

What are you actually visiting? Only thing i can think of at that particular area would be the travel lodge which is right on the island.

The A442 up from kidderminster isn't the best road out there - but it can be better than sitting for hours on the M6. The M54 is preferable to the A5, it's usually almost empty and no chance of holdups.

A family member has just moved there so I will be regularly visiting. Hence non specific time and date.
It is the local info like yours that I need.
Thanks

And at 2am you can do 159mph without being booked for speeding!

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

I'm not sure about the southern section of the route but if you take the toll road you shouldn't really hit any traffic.

Only thing i can think that may be a slight problem is transfering from the Toll road onto the M54 where you come off the motorway network onto local roads before joining the M54 at junction 1. This is still your best route though as you can come off the M54 at junction 6 and you are straight on the A5223.

And as Espada quite rightly states some of these roads are where a naughty policeman decided to take a high speed test drive in his new plod car!

Depends on the time of the day.

The best route is M42 South - then M5 - M6 - M54.

However the junction of M5/M6 can be very busy.

I have travelled weekly between London and Shrewsbury for many years and always go M42 - M5 - leave Junction 4 and take A491 to Stourbridge, A458 to Bridgenorth and then you take the A442.

There is a way around Stourbridge on some minor lanes thro' Churchill - you will need to get a detailed map of the area to find it.

See one option is M40/M42/M6T.

Stay on M6 for about a mile after the end of the toll section to J12, the A5 at Gailey. At first roundabout go left onto A449 which leads straight back to J2 on the M54.

Yes, go with Bromptonaut's suggestion. He's filled in the missing link that I wasn't sure about. The crow wouldn't fly that way but it's the best way if you're in a car.

Thanks for that detail. My maps show restricted junctions etc in that area and I was guessing there was a shorter route from the toll road to the M54
It is not easy to work it out on Michelin as junction nos are not marked. Multimap shows it much better.

Local know how has sorted it out.

>>I'd guess that the brand new UK Road Atlas your local filling station is doubtless knocking out for about £1.99 will be more than adequate for your needs unless you're planning on using greenlanes for the last sections

I have a collection of these. It is easy to see the route once it is presented by you good folks. I like to have it reasonably sorted, prior to the trip, rather than trust to local signs on the day.

My best map has a double page of the Birmingham area at one and a half miles to the inch but guess what? The M54 just gets in and the end of the toll road area etc does not.

Thanks all.

Indeed it can. This is near to IKEA isn't it, so it gets very busy on weekends, bank holidays and the like.

Watch out for police with speed camears on the bridges over the M54 (especially the Cosford Junction - 3).

I used to drive from West London to Wrexham to see the folks several times a year.

My journey was always M40, M42, M5, M6, M54, A5, A483

A doddle every time (until I got beyond Telford). Sometimes the M5/M6 junction was a bit busy but for nothing more than a few miles. And this was before the M6 toll - so it'll probably be quicker these days.
