Help Please

I own a pug 406 1.8lx on a 97 plate.

Since the last 2 days a constant tapping noise has developed which appears to be coming from under the glove compartment. I suspect it is the internal aircirculation unit. I belive it is this unit has i am hearing the same tapping noise has i did about 3 years ago when i had this unit repalced at a cost of £140 I have pressed the internal circulation switch which makes the noise even louder!

I do not intend to use this switch and want to disconect, is this possible?
