Debating buying a GSi with the above engine.
Any specific known problems with this engine?
I have test driven a GSi and noticed two things:
a) was very noisy/rattly at initial start up, though smoothed out after couple minutes idle.
Dealer said this was normal if car had been standing as oil needed to circulate - correct?
b) after test drive with bonnet up noticed the belts seem to make quite a noticeable noise - different to above noise.
Is this normal?
Car driven was an 05 plate with 5000 miles.

I'm suprised no one here has suggested buying a Mondeo TDCi instead (yet).

I don't really want a diesel (although the VX 3.0CDTi V6 is a nice engine!), and I prefer the Vectra as a car anyway.
Have tried one or two vectras forums but just thought I would see what info anyone here had on the two points I mentioned.

Yes, could be feasible.
b) belts seem to make quite a noticeable noise....
Could be because it had been standing, or maybe the engine bay has been steam cleaned and the belts are squeaky clean on their pulleys. Dealer permitting, ask him if you can put some talc or spray some wd-40 on the belts to see if the noise goes away.
Any specific known problems with this engine?
Hopefully midlifecrisis will be along shortly. He has one of these as his "company car".

I was, and so do I. When I have enough of my hard earned saved up, I intend replacing my 5yr old Vec with a newer one.

This is basically the same engine as the 2.5, 2.6 and 3.0, I had a 2.5 Vectra that was not very refined at low revs (compared to a Mondeo V6 for example) though smoothed out at higher rpm and was punchy and characterful. Reckon the 3.2 might exhibit similar charateristics.

Yeah, my mate has got a 03 3.2 V6 Elite with only 15k, and it seems to make a similar noise to what has been described. Garage has serviced it and not brought the issue up, so guess it must be ok. Most 3.2V6 GSi owners love their cars. Pretty good value in terms of insurance, servicing and fuel economy. Nice torquey engine with a growl from the exhaust.
