Thanks everyone, she had come straight from work so had no choice but to put her work bag (including purse, files, filo-fax and glasses) in the boot.
The police weren't really interested, said if she MUST she could bring the car in the next day between 8-9am for finger printing, which would have been a bit late as I was having the glass repaired that afternoon.
Does anyone know if the Golf V has lockable rear seats?

Kind of irrelevant with a hatch because of parcel shelf. The new Jetta (i.e. the new "Bora") will have.
If ever I need something out of sight when I'll be leaving the car (now have a Mondeo hatch) I try to do it before I set out, i.e. plan ahead. Try not to go in the boot if I can when out in public place.
As for "fingerprinting", do it. It's not just fingerprinting. Step-son had his car broken into and they got a blood sample because of broken glass and quite quickly identified the lad who did it. In fact on seeing a blood sample the scenes of crime officer got quite excited. The rest of the car was covered in glove prints but they obviously bled through these. So always worth the hastle - you never know what is left behind.

Good thinking ~ I must remember to do that in the future.
On a similar note, when we go away I always put the luggage into the boot before I take the car out of the garage ~ loading the boot with luggage on the drive is a dead giveaway that the house is likely to be unoccupied for some time. It's only possible to do this with an integral garage with access from the house of course.

Golf IV and V do not have locking rear seats as they are hatchbacks. Golf V has gained the fancy 'tilting' VW badge to open the tailgate but has lost the tailgate lock. However, I've managed to set the doors to autolock once on the move...

to autolock once on the move...>>
That's interesting, how did you achieve it?
In the case of my Bora, when I first got it a couple of years ago, I eventually managed to get it to unlock just the driver's door with a press of the remote control and all the doors with a second press.
Asking the local dealership how this was done (the owner's manual states a dealer should be able to advise how do it) proved a complete waste of time. The staff didn't have a clue, even the service manager.
The Bora will automatically relock itself after about 30 seconds if either of the front doors have not been opened during that time. It would be handy to incorporate it as a safety feature once on the move.

PS
My youngest offspring configured his Focus to autolock once the car was moving off.

They're lockable on my 1991 Celica.

Yep - you can set the Focus to autolock after 45 seconds or on the move. But only on the facelifted models.

This is a March 03 registered model; is that a facelifted version?

Yes. The easiest way to tell a facelifted one is if the indictators are in teh headlights rather than in the bumper.

Thanks Adam. Just checked one of the pix I took at the time when we picked it up in Leicstershire and the indicators are in the headlights.

No probs Stuart. I think the change happened around 02. There are other differences too such as strips on the bumpers, different cupholders etc...
The locking difference is accountable to the Electronic Control Module. I think the earlier ones (mine) had the CSM and the newer ones (your Son's) have the GEM. There are other little goodies that are "hidden" too and only available on the newer ones.
And that gets filed under "things you never wanted to know" ;-)

I set my GolfV to autolock via the trip computer - hold the rocker switch down until the settings menu appears. The autolock (and auto unlock) options are in the Convenience submenu. There is only a brief mention of this in the Tech Data supplement 04.2004 in the handbook.
I doubt if this is available on the Bora; there was no mention at all of option settings via the trip computer in the handbook for my 2001 Golf.

Thanks for that info - I think you are probably right re the Bora on the MFU side (it's a 2000 model year SE spec).
The manual does say that the central locking can also be set to open only the driver or passenger door or the tailgate/boot lid and to ask a VW dealer on how to activate the features. But, as I've already stated, my local dealership hadn't a clue when I asked....:-)

Autolocking doors when you drive off has been available on most vehicles for a long time. Not default behaviour in UK but an option. All recent VWs and Fords can do this for sure
For example, a Ford with central locking you can set the car to autolock when you get above 7mph. Details on a forum search on this site.
BUT the question for this thread was LOCKING SEAT BACKS not doors. They did that and got items stolen from the boot. VWs saloons I know have key lockable seat backs.
