306 won't start really urgent please - thomp1983
hi just finished rebuilding my 306 engine, it's had the following done,

headgasket
head rebuilt/cleaned up
glow plugs
cambelt
waterpump
fuel filter
oil filter
air filter

now it is refusing to start, i have read the old posts and they all point to an air leak but i can't source one, i have primed the system by hand till the pump hardens and it still won't start, have also tried pumping the primer while turning the engine over. immobiliser is fine so sort of stuck now, onl issue i feel maybe that 1,the intercooler to inlet manifold gasket is really poor, can i replace this with instant gasket? 2, i have a spare wiring plug, it's a brown connector with 2 pins and is over the gearbox housing can't see any mention of it in haynes wiring diagrams or books and i can't see any loose connectors in the engine bay. the engine turns over fine and sounds healthy it just won't fire at all, can anybody help as i really need the car back on the road.

cheers

It probably just needs more bleeding. Either try turning it over briefly, then pumping the primer (igniton on), repeating till it's hard all the time, or slack off the injector unions, and then crank it till fuel starts to come out of the unions, nip them up as they start to leak, then try it. My BX TD took a lot of cranking to get it to start after I had the head off, but it went eventually. If you're still struggling, check that the timing of the injection pump is right - it's easy to get the cambelt a tooth or two out.

You need the proper gasket for the intercooler - it's only a couple of quid from the dealer. The brown plug might be for the rev counter. Neither will stop the engine running though.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

What year is it? What engine is it XUD9TE?

Other things to check in addition are...

Can you see your stop solenoid, or is it the later model with a covered security plate? If you can see your stop solenoid, check its getting voltage.

Are your glow plugs heating up? Measure the voltage between the glow plug connection and ground.

it's a '96 model not sure if i can see the stop solenoid as the pump is different to that pictured on the haynes manual

have bypassed the fuel filter by connecting the injectioon pump to primer still no joy, justt checked the glow plugs there getting 11.5 volts, just removed one though and theres no sign of heat from them should they be warm to touch? i have turned the ignition on and off a couple of times waiting for the light to go out and theres still no sign of heat?

help please

If the plugs are new and you have 11.5 volts then they should be heating up. Have you left off an earth strap somewhere. Try mearsing the voltage across a plug directly to the outer rather than earth somewhere else. Regards Peter

Two questions.

1. Are they wet with diesel?

2. Did you have the plug earthed when you checked it?

If there is no diesel "dampness", then maybe a fueling problem or an air lock. Have you loosened a couple of unions at the injector to see if diesel is getting there?

If the plugs weren't earthed then that could stop them heating up.

plugs had something on them, and there is diesel at the injector union, can anyone tell me where the earths for iglow plugs are? the engine went back together perfectly except for the one connector mentioned above

ok plugs definately work, there is both earth and live at each plug when fitted, there is fuel at injectors car seems to turn over a little quick if anything, fuel filter is bypassed, prmer is constantly pressurised so suspect no leaks, what else does this leave? only other thing of note is that i used a thicker headgasket than the one that came off this is normal according to the supplier would this affect the timing? the timing sound be spot on as it was all set to the timing marks when taken apart and all lined up correctly still when belt was put back on so i assume it's correct?

You could try blowing a hairdrier into the air intake, and/or heating up the engine with hot water poured over it.

Could the injection timing be incorrect?

What about if someone feels the exhaust while it cranks, is it pumping air (as it should)?

Sorry for any typos Im very long sited

well it's works after a load of cranking over, until you release the throttle just assume this is where ive bypassed the fuel filter though so should be sorted tomorrow, thanks for all the help
