just come in from a night out, went to cardiff auctions. lots of cars with very few people, what sold was fetching retail money. many vehicles went unsold, cant remember the details of individual cars except a two and a half year old daewoo matiz with 126000 miles went for £2500 provisional and an 02 leon for £5500 provisional i thought that was all its money and it was snot green ...cheers...keo

These cars had not sold they are run up bids by the auctioneer to catch a punter.

My experience with auctions is that given the risk, and given the bargains that can be found elsewhere in the motor trade these days, I don't think they are worth the bother now.
To be honest, I prefer some of the car supermarkets to auctions in terms of value for money, and you are less likely to buy a car that isn't what you really want than in an auction.

After a car has been through once you are entitled to ask what the reserve is ,this when you can do the best deals. And as Roly says you have to watch out for the chaff there is plenty of it about especially on Ebay.

too true a lot of the stuff going through was being bid "off the wall" seemed to be getting bids, it doesn't work when their is only a handfull of people there. you only have to look nobody (that i could see) was bidding but the auctioneer was taking "bids" . ...cheers...keo.

Yeah, I noticed this when I was at Cardiff Auctions- it was on a Saturday morning, and even though there wasn't many punters present, the auctioneer was getting lots of bids that weren't obvious!
|
Does anyone know if the big auction companies do this fake bidding or is it only the smaller less reputable auction houses who do this? I would expect that the auctioneer would not be doing it on big fleet auctions from leasing companies. If it was found out the vendor could have their reputation damaged and I cannot see a national leasing company risking that.
|
Well they definitely do it at British Car Auctions who are the biggest in the UK AFAIK, and do the disposals for a lot of big fleets.
The punters don't help themselves though - lots of people like to hide so others can't see them bidding.

I was bidding for a car the other day (me=joe public). The bids were £50 at a time . It was just me against a dealer when we got to £5000 the auctioneer pointed at me and said £5150. As the bidding had been in £50 lots up until this point I immediately hessitated and the car was sold to the dealer for £5000. had I realised at the time I should have offered a smaller amount but he caught me off guard.
Last week I bought a 1 owner mobility car. It had had a service once a year for the first two years and was now due another service (3 years old and 28 thousand miles) first job I did was to drain out the oil, what came out was about 1ltr of very black oil. So I now take "lady owner" to mean there is a high possibility the oil has never been checked. Next time I buy a car from a lady owner I shall ask how they checked the oil. I do not wish to offend women owners ,its just that my wife said she wouldn,t know how to check the cars oil,(Citroen Saxo 2 lady owners).
