Hi,
If i'm looking at a car with a window price of £5500 would it be rude to start off with a offer of £4400 or should i start nearer the £5000 mark?
What sort of discount can is achivable? I've heard 10% off as well as £1000?
Any haggle advice welcome.

It depends if the car is a popular seller or not.
Might help if you mention the car you're interested in.
|
Always start low - you can always go up but never go down.
|
Depends where too - you'll get nothing off in the discount places.
|
If the car is popular model/colour/spec you may get little.
If it's near end of month and they are desperate to do a deal to meet targets, a lot.
No trade in helps.
Instant cash - I'll buy tomorrow IF.. works well but be prepared to make sure you are 100% certain .
Always be polite: if you upset vendor it can ruin deal but haggling is not rude but an ancient Scots custom :-)
If you have a wife/partner take them along : you can use the argument "my wife likes it but.. it's not the correct colour/too expensive etc and she says she'll only approve if it costs £750 less". This is the counter to the salesman's "speak to the manager " ploy and works very well as long as your wife/partner plays his/her part properly and understands the script!
Always find at least two faults to haggle for.
New carpets are a freebie you should demand - even just to cover the originals. The seller (if a dealer) probably has a stock with their name on.
12 months MOT and HPI foc of course. Anything less is a nogo.
V5 there . If not a very big discount. Ditto service history.
Basically you look for reasons not to buy and seller to persuade you to buy with cash..
You can always walk away. Lots of cars to choose.. about 5M sold s/h every year.
Check price guides before you haggle.Remember dealers will buy at auction at or below trade price..

I don't think any full time trader will accept an offer of more than 10% off the label price as anything more than a joke unless the car is seriously overpriced compared to it's market value.
Unless you know the car is priced more than £1500 over Glass's value I would imagine the lowest to offer is about 10% off. From there on, you have only extras to haggle about - full tank of fuel, extra year of warranty they offer you for £250 and it costs them £80, full valet etc.

It's a mondeo estate 1.8 zetec 2001, 75,000miles, from a car supermarket.
|
If it's a car supermarket they almost certainly won't haggle.
|
Is it better to buy at the end of the month? also if a cars been sitting on forecourt for 3-4 weeks is it better for me?
Thanks for the advice.
|
a) Probably depends whether the dealer is having a good or a bad month
b) logically, I'd think so. But it might have been sitting there cos it's way overpriced.
