Mobile Phone Car Kits - bhoy wonder
My company is giving me £150 to install a car kit in my car.

Does anyone know of good installers in the Glasgow area and what can I expect for my money?

I have a Nokia 6310.

Halfords will fit a kit for any phone for 100 quid. If I was you I'd buy a bluetooth headset for fifty quid and pocket the other 100.

There seems to be a bit of a misunderstanding in the world.

One needs a car kit - i.e. the phone anchored to the car, in order to use the phone legally when moving. The point being that you are not allowed to use your phone if you need to hold the phone to make or receive a call.

People seem to believe that if you use a bluetooth headset you're legal - well if the phone is not anchored, then you're not.

Whether or not you use a bluetooth headset, a wired headset, or its wired into the stereo is not relevant to the law.

All my cars have car kits. The only one I paid for myself is the nokia one in the girlie's car. That was about £140 including the various bits and bobs to wire it in to the stereo, and fitting.

It has a mike up in the ceiling, it uses the stereo's speakers and it mutes everything when a call is made or received.

It obviously holds the phone in a cradle where it is also supplied power. No visible wires and the cradle bracket kind of fits into the side of the stereo fitting meaning that no holes were drilled.

The guy fitted it where and how I wanted and it took about an hour.

I'd have no idea where you could get one fitted in Scotland.

Or you could do like me and get a mobile phone that has speakerphone (free when you're next due an upgrade) and a normal phone holder for a tenner. You'll have to turn your stereo down by hand though.

Don't know them personally, but provide very helpful advice on their forum and *seem* to know what they're talking about.

By the way, the basic, and probably best (because it directly supports an external aerial) car kit for the Nokia 6310i (Nokia Cark 91) has been discontinued, but you might still find some around. Or else there's usually some for sale on eBay.

That's a great price (£50 inc vat and delivery). You ought to be able to get it fitted for another £50 or so, or it's a pretty simple DIY job.

Well there certainly is some misunderstanding.

I've been told by the local policeman that y phone and headset are perfectly legal to use when driving and the phone is not anchored anywhere. I use a wired headset with auto answer and vice recognition dialing. I never need to hold the phone so how am I breaking the law?

Vice recognition dialing may well attract police attention.

Serously the issue is having the phone in yr hand for any part of the process. Auto answer and vox dial meet the requirements of the regs.

I don't know about all phones, but mine has a magic word that it listens for. So I'm in the car, the phone's on it's holder and I say "butterscotch" or something, and that alerts the phone that I want to voice-dial someone.

I don't know how effective it is. I've not tried it. And if I did, I'd unlikely use the word "butterscotch".

Gah. Apologies for apostrophe misuse in the previous post. I'm usually the first person to poke someone with sticks when they do that.

Thart's one clever phone, on mine you have to press and hold the green button before voice dialling is activated.

Like I said, I've not tried it. I just read in the instructions* that it was possible. Maybe I'll try it tonight.

*-Yes I read the instructions. I have failed as a man.

The 6310i will do this with a Bluetooth headset. The phone can be in your briefcase or jacket etc. On my Plantronics headset you just keep a button pushed for 2 secs on the headset which gives you a tone to indicate the voice dial command can be given. It can also be set to auto answer an incoming call.

Simple with a pucker hands free ,I have Parrot bluetooth in one car and a Sony ericsson hard wired in the other I can use the phone in either car and phoning and answering is done purely by voice. You have to put all your voice tabs for all the numbers you wish to dial first then its easy peasy.

If you're after a car kit that's future proof then I can recommend the THB Universal 8. Older THB kits were poorly made but this is very good.

From www.handsfreewarehouse.co.uk it's about £110 but the beauty is you can change the cradle for other phones if you upgrade (even holds some PDA phones). I know Nokia's current car kits are versatile for Nokia's by swapping cradles but this will take all sorts, even a Bluetooth module.

Not sure about install costs because my company pays for that. I'm not sure £150 will cover the cost of a bracket, car kit and fitting though.

Just put car hands free into Google and it lists mobile installers for every area.
