Astra Good Deal - boderek
went to garage today saw a automatic 2002 02 REG Vauxhall astra 1.6i envoy, 6000 miles on clock, petrol. price £5495.00. Trading in my car vauxhall vectra 92,000 miles on clock 1998 model 1.6, he said he would only give me £400 tops for it. Is this a good deal or should I haggle to get more for my car or money off new car. also can I ask for longer warranty or extras or is that only with brand new cars. Help please.

£400 trade-in seems a bit mean.

If he is only offering you £400, buy the Astra for cash and negotiate a better deal (i.e. a discount of more than £400) and sell the Astra through Autotrader.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Yes I thought £400 was mean as well really only want to pay £4500.00 for the astra, is this possible. Will go back and say want more for my car and see what they say. If you don't ask.......

Tell him you'll give him 4500 cash that day, but not a penny more, if he takes your old car in part ex.

We were looking at auto Astras a few months ago. 5-6k should get you a nice metallic c20k 02 Club model with the all important aircon - even a Network Q example. The Envoy is a base model - fine if you don't want/need aircon, but I think 5495 sounds too high.

This is why I love this site, i thought the price sounded Ok and I never knew the Envoy is a basic model. The car does have the important air con. Anymore points i could pick up from you all re. the astra, so i can go into the showroom and know my stuff.

I would imagine the Envoy 1.6 auto (like the Club) has the 8v engine as opposed to the 16v. A lot of the guides reckon the 8v is dog slow (worse than the 1.4 even) but a Vauxhall specialist I spoke to says that the 8v is a better, simpler engine to work on. I have read of 16v engines with sticking valves...

I'd probably try to hunt down a model with alloys as well, makes the car look much jollier IMO

Indeed, the Z16SE 8v engine isn't a high performing engine, but is much more reliable than the 16v engines. The 8v engine is a derivative of the 16SV engine that was introduced with the mkII cavalier, the block of which shares many design features with the earlier 1.3 OHC engine, dating back to the early eighties or so. This engine has been around long enough for all of its little issues to be sorted. Servicing the 8v engine is simplicity itself - it is very high on the list of my favourite engines to work on :-).

In common with most current Vauxhall petrol engines, the EGR valve can stick, causing rough running, but there has been a revised engine software version which excercises the valve in an attempt to make it keep itself clean, and reduce sticking - this software update is well woth installing as it fixes a number of driveability issues, making the car more pleasurable to drive.

My dad has a 1.6 auto Astra Club on a 51 plate, and that has the 16v engine, not the 8v. IIRC, as he specified an auto, the 8v engine wasn't an option.

Both engines in Club trim were available with auto according to Parkers. The numerous 02 Clubs I viewed/checked out all had the 8v engine so I figured they were more common, perhaps some sort of motability contract at the time?

I think Marc it's probably more likely to do with most people buying a low spec car like a Club are looking for cheap motoring so went for the lower priced 8v

Stick your Vectra on e-bay, i got £1010 for a 98 1.8 with 119,000 on the clock.
