Peugeot 205GTI 1.6/1.9 - Quinny
Is there any way of telling the difference between these two engines,just by looking at them?

Hello Quinny,
The 1.6 had a XU5J engine and the 1.9 had a XU9JA. I?m not sure whether this is stamped on them anywhere.

I also think the 1.9 had an oil cooler whereas the 1.6 didn?t. To be honest I?m not 100% sure whether some 1.6?s may have been fitted with oil coolers later on.

The reason I ask,is because I do a form of motorsport,and someone is using a 205GTI,and seems to beat the hell out of everybody else,and is suspected of cheating using the 1.9 engine.But no-one seems to know how to check.One things for certain,and obvious,but as yet hasn't been picked up by the scrutineers,he's using a different ecu to the standard one.

I must add,it's not in my class,I'm in a different one.

The 2 engines are very similar in appearance. On the 1.9 there is a spacer between the sump and block to allow for the longer stroke - that should be obvious from below the car.

Look for the engine code. it is stamped on a plate on the left hand side of the engine on the top of the head and just below the rocker cover, its usually silver and blue in colour. Refer to the hand book or haynes to identify the engine. Hope this helps.

Hello.

I have recently bought what I was told was a 205 GTI 1.9. It has the 1.9 badging; however, I'm not so sure as it has drum brakes and 14" wheels.

It does seem to have a spacer between the block and the sump but if it does it's quite skinny. Approximately how wide is said spacer on the 1.9? (And it is made out of metal?)

Perhaps a 1.9 engine has been fitted somewhere in its lifetime. Even if it hasn't, is that such a bad thing?
