Isle of Man experiences - Sofa Spud
I've just returned from my first visit to the Isle of Man, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Before going there I'd heard tales of the roads, which have no overall speed limit, being full of mad bikers and fast drivers.

However, the driving experience was fine. Speeds were generally the same or lower than on comparable UK roads. Most people more or less observe the 30, 40 and 50 zones. Very little tailating.
Up on the Mountain Road, which is part of the TT course, drivers do tend to go rather faster.

I noticed that 'Stop' signs are used at most junctions, with relatively few 'Give Ways' - the opposite to over here.

Although the I.o.M. papers have reports of crimes, few people lock their bikes and my trailer was left on an old airfield with some disused cars and was still there 10 days later!

My Passat TDI did just under 50 mpg on the 750 mile round trip, that's with a luggage trailer and 4 passengers! I kept to 60 on the motorway, though. Liverpool was the worst part of the trip (NOT because of the people or the buildings!) but simply because the directions to the ferry terminal were abysmal. Even with maps it was enough to turn any competent motorist into a dithering dodderer!!

Cheers, Sofa Spud

"Even with maps it was enough to turn any competent motorist into a dithering dodderer!!"

Sat nav - you know it makes sense.
Isle of Man experiences - Sofa Spud
That's funny - someone offered to buy me a satnav just before we went away and I declined the offer, saying I'd always found a road atlas or street maps were just fine. Up until Liverpool!!!

cheers, SS

Funny you should say mention the Isle of Man.

Mum and Dad have just gone there for the weekend.

Told you it would be funny.

A long while ago I had a video from Duke Marketing of Tony Pond going round the IOM circuit in a Rover 827 and being the first to average over 100 MPH while doing so (in a car). The Vitesse was supposed to be unmodified although the exhaust sounded a bit 'interesting'

Anyone remember that?
Isle of Man experiences - Altea Ego
Ah Tony Pond! I rememeber once someone asked him what he thought of the metro 6R4.

"It scares the life out of me"
Isle of Man experiences - AlastairW
Tony Pond eh. AS i recall he never got to the 100mph average cos the fuel kept slopping around in the tank. Brave man, though, given some of the crap he was expected to drive for BL and its various incarnations...
Isle of Man experiences - Altea Ego
Indeed, If I recall correctly the Metro frequently burst into flames and try to cook him,
Isle of Man experiences - codefarm
>>i recall he never got to the 100mph average<<

On the video they show you footage of him failing to do it the year before, but apparently he succeeded on the next attempt.

I still have a copy of the video somewhere.

He definitely made the 100 MPH average but I remembered it being in an SD1.

>>>He definitely made the 100 MPH average but I remembered it being in an SD1.<<<

Definitely not an SD1. It was a 827 Vitesse.

Mind you, my SatNav would be useless once you get to the IOM, on my maps its a featureless green blob with no roads or towns.

the channel islands do not even exist on my europe maps!

During my holiday I drove or passengered the entire TT course, not all in one go but piecemeal, travelling at normal traffic speeds by car. I find it difficult to imagine anyone being able to average over 100 mph around it in any sort of car UNLESS the entire course was closed off, as during the TT.

If you want that daredevil feeling but without the speed, I recommend riding on one of the 110 year-old electric tramcars on the section north of Laxey, where the track goes along a steeply sloping cliff edge 600 ft up. For maximum effect, travel in one of the open-sided 'toastrack' type! Even if there isn't a sheer drop it looks like one from the tram and it sways about quite a lot.

Cheers, SS

Of course it was closed off! Tony did his run not long after the TT finished. He didn't try it during rush hour (although it would have made for a very interesting video!)

Superb place to go, excellent roads with proper bends (so it doubles asa race track). Spent some time there a few years ago hosted by IoM Police - and had a "drive" under supervision of a Traffic Officer..

Adski,

Did your parents go in a Frying Pan. (SWMBO asked me to ask - something obscure no doubt)
Isle of Man experiences - Adam {P}
PU,

I have to be honest, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I'm afraid it's a little too obscure!

SWMBOs explained - something a Welsh Nursery Rhyme about going to the IoM in a frying pan.

Used to go to the IOM on business. Always raining but, without fail, whoever met us at the airport would always say "You should have been here yesterday ... weather was super"

Would get the first flight in and, if we rushed the meeting, we could be on the 2pm flight back out!

Isle of Man experiences - Adam {P}
I'm not to au fait with Welsh nursery rhymes it must be said PU ;-)

I must say though - I didn't know the phones would play up so much. Can't get connected most of the time, get cut off mid call and they get charged every time we ring them.

Oh - and text messages don't get through.

Oh well.

I seem to recall that the IOM dumped GSM and went for a 100% 3G network.......
Isle of Man experiences - Adam {P}
And what the hell does that mean? That we can send videos but not calls? ;-)

(Not too hot on telecommunications as you may have guessed!)

It means that 3G is carp, not just in the IOM.
Isle of Man experiences - Adam {P}
Ahhh.

To swerve this back onto motoring and even fit in an IOM reference, they're back early.

Car trouble.

Oh well - wild party cancelled.

I'd love to go to the IoM and will one day - does anyone have any info about comparative costs of own car + ferry and fly-drive? I live down Sarf.
Isle of Man experiences - Sofa Spud
Isle of Man ferries aren't cheap, nor is flying there, from what I was told.

Cheers, SS

From Liverpool in the car for two, I think it was around £190.

If you fly you may get to see, well known IOM resident, Norman Wisdom on the flight as we did a couple of years ago.
Managed to stop my client shouting out "MR GRIMSDALE" but was n't easy!

Isle of Man experiences - Thommo
You MUST go to the IOM for the TT on a motorbike once before you die.

If you go once you will definitely go twice but probably not more than three times.

Its horrendously expensive prices are jacked up two or three times normal for that fortnight and you need to book a year ahead to get a ferry time and a hotel.

The boat from Heyshem is a form of medieval torture. The Seacat out of Liverpool is nice but only works one day out of two.

Never ever go round the mountain course the 'wrong way' even when the road is open both ways. Stay off you bike and get drunk and watch the spectacle on Suicide Sunday which is aptly named.

First time I went the sun shone like the Caribbean for a fortnight and I thought wow this is amazing. The next three times it was freezing and hacking down with rain all day every day. For this reason do NOT camp out.

That said it is an absolutely fabulous experience. The site of all those bikes is incredible. The entertainment is amazing from top bands to top comedians to strippers to opera (yes really). Plus it is a point of honour amongst bikers that there is never any trouble on the island.

Do it!
