Good afternoon all,
might be of interset for any of you coming this way for the Trafalgar 200 and festival of the sea events.
A heavy police presence is in the area focusing on the main 3 roads into the city in preparation for the events that start on Tues 28th. I have just been doen the A2030 towards Southsea and there were 4 police van camera outfits backed up by about a dozen bikes or so. Presume any terrorists wanting to get into the city will also be speeding? Maybe they are using the numberplate recognition to spot any vehicles that are of interest from a security ponit of view, has anyone heard of this being done outside of London before?
Enjoy the festivities if you are coming, just dont mention the war

It also shows that they wont be doing any crime prevention in the city or out-lying area's. I didn't realise that we had so many police in this area.. Brian

neither did I, bike cops looked a bit warm in the leathers though

probably extra drafted in to "protect" the navy ships of the world from threats, queen also there etc, so all precautions will be in place
the admiral was in the paper saying one of his biggest worries was a foriegn navy ship blowing the local conservatives out for a sail out of the water - misinterpreting it as a terrorist boat, so i guess they will try to prevent that kind of thing
although what rights they have to stop civillians out for a sail im not sure

I think it was number plate recognition. There are not many roads into Pompey so I suppose they are working on the idea that they could cover it all.

Anyone out there fancy getting close to a french built nuclear powered aircraft carrier? Thought not.

Incidentally the busiest day is expected to be Tuesday 28th. All Portsmouth & Gosport schools are closing. Most Fareham schools (jn 11 of M27) are also closed as the Emergency Planning Dept of county have advised visitor numbers could be in excess of 1m and Police have apparently said that they will close access to Fareham & Gosport if too much traffic, and gridlock effect could come out to Fareham. The concern is that parents won't be able to get to schools to pick up kids.
Other estimates say 250,000 visitors... I expect a lot depends on the weather. I doubt it will be as bad as predicted, but if you don't need to be on the M27 next Tuesday (lunchtime through to late night) it's probably best avoided!
|
It does seem to be that a level of hysteria has hit the area about the crowds (epecially in the minds of local government). If they carry on like this, no one will turn up.

I doubt the police have said anything like that at all. Trafalgar is a commercial event, with road and traffic planning being down to the council. The police are really only there to deal only with the terrorism threat and any major incidents.
Incidentally, a PNC marker for the ANPR can be put on a vehicle for any reason, not just having no tax/insurance. If it's on false plates, that can be picked up too, as they wont be registered to anything/anyone.

This happens regularly on three roads in/out of Birmingham presumably to pick up all of the illegally driven uninsured/untaxed vehicles and their miscreant users - good job too
|
no chance they are all driving on false plates, or cars they havnt bothered to send the lof book off on
the only people the ever catch are the hard working majority doing something minor

>>the only people the ever catch are the hard working majority doing something minor
Presumably all an ANPR can catch is missing Tax, MOT, or Insurance. Surprised that the "hard working majority" would consider those minor.

As I passed Porstmouth today, local radio announced it was all part of the security operation in the run up to the event. Apparently they've caught a whole bunch of possible criminals wanted for crimes in other areas, including 2 people wanted for murder in Birmingham.
As these operations generally seem to be very successful, one has to wonder why they aren't done more often, and maybe even some permanent installations. Could even replace a couple of speed cameras. My guess is the money aspect, as there is now a whole business resting on the back of speeding fines, but none on anpr.
|
well there is permanent number plate recognition if you drive in or out of the city of london you will have been clocked
presumably the congestion charge zone is similar
still cannot help thinking they are only catching the stupid big time criminals driving their own car on their own plates and actually registered to the correct address
rest will just be trivia
great if the caught some murderers, wonder what the substance behind that story is
more like george orwell said every day

I was out sailing on the Solent yesterday - business jolly. I was aware of the security exclusion zone around the ships and we were a couple of hundred metres from them, but we were still 'asked' to go away by four Marines in a boat. The machine guns added a little weight to their request. They are taking security very seriously.
Very good lunch in Seaview though and we missed the thunderstorms - just!

Also, If anyone wants to go South of Winston Churchill Avenue (See multimap link: tinyurl.com/a97n3 ) proof of residency will be required. I imagine the queues while papers are checked will be horrendous. The cameras on the Roads in and out of Portsmouth are ANPR, so loads of untaxed vehicles have appeared on nearby streets to not move for a week. Parking Warden's heaven?? Avoid entering the area by car. From 13:00 Tuesday until around 22:00 then every day until Friday.

We all know that our movements are constantly tracked. And Traffic Master is possibly the worst?
But if your car is stolen... why cannot you tap into that information?
