Has the cost of car insurance suddenly dropped? Last year I paid about £550 (was the best quote at the time) this year I've paid just over £250. I still live in the same place the only difference is another years NCD, from 2 to 3 years and same car and cover. Any one else experience this? Thanks.

Nope can't say I have. Recently insured the car and bikes.

Usually nonsense with the renewal notice, 120% increase over last year, but got roughly the same deal as last year by getting quotes off the excellent confused.com.

So same same.

My insurance went down very slightly this year but this was unusual as most years it gradually increases despite me getting older and wiser????

I can only assume I was ripped off last year, but I'm sure I checked around.

I don't know how old you are but at 25 insurance drops quite a bit.

For me, a fairly consistent pattern is that I shop around for the best quote one year, and then next year the renewal is anything from 50 to 100% higher. So I shop around again, and usually get one that is only about 10% higher.
This year I would agree though - I have actually got a quote somewhat lower than the previous company last year.

I have found no consistency between types of company. Some years a big name like Norwich Union comes out by far the best, the next year it goes up so I switch to Tesco. Two years later Tesco goes up 50%, so I have now switched to Priviledge at £100 less than the Tesco quote. Doubtless next year they will escalate in their turn, so the saga will continue.

Aren't there people called "insurance brokers" who are supposed to do all this shopping around and just tell us the best quote?
No - their quotes go up and down too on a similar yo-yo!

I always check insurace cover prices for my car two or three weeks before the renewal is due.

A couple of years ago I switched to DirectLine which, for once, proved the cheapest rather than one of the most expensive quotes - it was for £193 fully comprehensive.

I did the same checks last year and was resigned to paying a little more only to be very surprised when DirectLine's renewal fee had dropped to £176.

It's the first time I've had a reduction although I had kept it at around £145-155 for several years previous to changing cars and opting for DirectLine.

Shouldn't be an age thing i'm in my mid thirties. I'm finding it almost worrying. I'm thinking what have I missed? Swinton have always been the cheapest upto now but it's the AA this time with Churchill a close second. I've declared everything, I can't see any point in not doing so only to have it cancelled when you need it. I just find it hard to handle such a large price difference. That said Esure wanted about £450.

Thanks for the replies.

I saw a significant fall in premiums on 2 of our cars in Jan this year by moving to Norwich Union. Of course, renewal premiums will almost certainly jump up and I'll be shoppimg around as usual next year.

I've been off the road for a while, but places like the Post Office don't look too bad for insurance. Although everyone has been going on about Tesco and I found them expensive.
