The time has come to change the cambelt for the first time on my car. At the same time the alternator belt is going to be changed.
I've had a quote from a main dealer for £130 for the two belts to be changed. Does this sound reasonable?
Does the tensioner need to be changed? Or can it be left for the next cambelt change?
The car is a 2000W and has 48k miles and has FPSH

Don't know if this helps, but 130 quid for a cambelt change on a diesel 306 would be very reasonable - your 2 litre may be easier to work around though. If you live anywhere down south, i'd say 130 was a decent price, especially from a main dealer.
It's generally good practice to change the tensioner at the same time, although it shouldn't really be a problem if you choose not to.

I'd say that price was very reasonable for a main pug dealer.
My local independent last charged me 50 quid plus the price of the belts.
Tensioner should be ok. Get them to check the water pump for any leaks.
Mines is a diesel (1993 XTDT) and still on the same tensioner and water pump at approx 140k miles. Tensioners on the pugs dont have a history of failing, however I'd be wise to replace both at my next timing belt replacement next year.

The dealer in question is based in Bristol.
I had a independent quote me £50 plus cost of belts in Manchester. I'd prefer to do the job main dealer if the difference in price is very little. Where is the water pump on my 2.0 petrol engine? Is it part of the cambelt setup? I know my aircon compressor runs from the alternator. I have read about tensioners being replaced on PSA diesels but never seen anything on petrol engines. What is the replacement interval for tensioners on petrol engines?

The tensioner etc will be fine. The water pump will be inspected for leaks when the belt is off, it'll be fairly obvious if it is leaking.
£130 is a cheap price for the job, go for it!

Solara - is your independent anywhere near Devon or Leeds or Manchester? The belt on my 1.9TD Xsara is due to break in 3860 miles... :-)

I think anywhere between £120 and £150 is pretty much what you'd expect. A local Peugeot independent specialist in Leicester charged me £140 2 years ago to change the cambelt on my 1994 306 1.9TD. The cost breakdown was something like £22 for the belt, £98 labour and the remainder the VAT.

You can get a Cambelt Kit for about £150 and while your there you may as well get the waterpump changed.
Don't know if the 2.0 Cab Engine suffers cambelt failure but I know the 2.0 16v GTI Engine is prone and I have suffered cambelt tensionor failure as the last owner changed the cambelt only.
Better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry the Cambelt kit is £150 ish to buy only not including fitting.
|
Cambelt kit at £150? Wow, it must be gold plated!
I'd expect to pay around £75 for a brand name kit (Gates)
XUD cambelt change? £99 all in, using a genuine belt.

I've had the belt done - It ended up costing £220. The tensioner was fine. Got the cambelt & Alternator belt done.
When they checked the water pump they told me it was leaking from the bearing. So the pump costed £90 (removal of old one and fitting of new one with parts cost)
