Peugeot 306 power steering

Peugeot 306 power steering - jayvee
My son has a pug 306 hdi, w reg. He complains that the power steering is occasionally heavy and the wheel doesn't return back to centre after turning a corner, I have checked the fluid reservoir, the pump drive belt seems to be tight , and nothing is screaming like a slipping belt. Has anybody had similar problems?
