Heavy rear tyre wear Renault Megane - BobG
My '03 Megane 1.9dCi has worn its rear tyres down to 2mm in 25000 mls. The fronts have 5mm on each. The two rears have worn evenly and with no odd marks. When I replaced them with two more Michelins the fitter seemed surprised at this wear ( as was I ) and could not suggest an explanation. 60% of the milage has been on motorways and the tyres have been checked weekly when cold. Any ideas out there ?

For fear of repeating much information, do visit Parkers.co.uk and check their forums - lots of chat about this issue - although 25K doesn't seem bad really...for a Ren-no.

Thanks - I'll check there tonight and then possibly see the main dealer.

The rear tyres on my Laguna II Tourner did not last much longer than the fronts (fr 27k, rear 33k ish iIrc; on my VW/Audis, the rears were everlasting (60k+ - unfortunately, as they wore unevenly on the Golf MKIVs and became very noisy..). Dealer blamed Continental, I didn't keep the car long enough to see how the replacement Michelins fared.

Maybe the front tyres were swapped to the rear at the last service to even out the wear rates.

I thought of that just after I had posted the first message and went to the main dealer this morning to check. Apparently they do not do this as it often causes all 4 to need replaced at about the same time(which equals big cost to customer already paying over the odds for main dealer servicing ). The chief "technician " tells me that there is a known problem with Continentals on Lagunas wearing fast at the rear but he had not seen a Megane with this problem. They did "check" the usual bits around the rear end and could find nothing odd or out of manufacturers tolerances.

ON the Rf goona, its on 36k

The fronts are on the last legs, past the wear indicators on the outside shoulders, on the wear indicators across the middle, healthy tread on the inside.

The rears are still well short of the wear indicators, look to have at least another 10k on them, but are showing a definate tendency to wear on the outside shoulders as well.

so even tho the tyre wear is uneven, 36k fronts is about average for all the previous cars I have had.
