Mazda MX5 Eunos - CharlieG
Am considering buying a Mazda MX5 Eunos as they are more plentiful than UK spec cars. have heard that some spares are more difficult and expensive to find than UK sourced cars. would appreciate any advice/comments on this. Also does anyone know of independent specialists in the London area that can service, repair the Eunos. Many thanks.

I owned a UK spec MX5 for two and a half years and loved it! I really recommend the car, whether you go for UK or non-UK spec.

Check out the forum on the owners club website www.mx5oc.co.uk - I think most of the Eunos vs Mazda FAQs are addressed on this.

As far as I'm aware, insurance is a bit more expensive on non-UK cars (as is the case for most models, not just the MX5). Also, some Mazda dealers won't/can't service the Eunos, but there are many independents out there who will. If you're in London, try Dandycars (www.dandycars.com) as they are very Eunos-friendly.

Hope this helps!

many thanks for your advice, I have actually seen Dandycars web site and they do seem to have a good selection of Eunos. Will take a trip over to them this weekend.

Generally the "can't get spares for the imports" is a load of twaddle. About the only things different are the badges!.

There is a fairly active mailing list on yahoo autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/mx-5/ who will respond to questions on good garages in various areas.

Hi,

I recently purchased (January) a 1990 Eunos Roadster. I was also a little concerned due to all the rumours of parts etc. As I now know all the parts for the Eunos and the UK MX5 are identical, all were made in the same factory. Only slight difference is things like aircon which weren't an option on early UK cars. I have also had to get parts from Mazda and they have been helpful and accomodating at all times.

There is a massive following and the best source of info is the MX5 owners club - www.mx5oc.co.uk (hope the mods don't mind me linking, I am a member but in no direct way affiliated).

Insurance in west London for me, actually dropped about 30% from a '95 1.8 Golf to the Eunos which took me very much by surprise!

There are a number of insurance companies that regard the Eunos as an identical car to a UK MX5 and claim not to load premiums - try Adrian flux and AON. Tesco also came in fairly competitive.

By the way, the car is excellent fun and I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

I came across a company that insures Eunos drivers for less than £200.

I have a eunos, which i`ve had for 3 years. If you are going for an older model of mx5 then eunos is probably the better bet because of normally lower miles, standard a/c, e/w, headrest speakers and the fact it may not have had years on our salted roads. Things to look out for are: make sure the underbody has been waxolyed and keep re-applying every 3 years, if headlights fail u will end up replacing them as with jap models you cannot fit seperate bulbs (£50 the pair). probably need fog light fitted and uk car stereo. All parts are readily optainable from several e specialists
Dandy cars offer excellent cars BUT you are paying a way over the top. Also their servicing costs seem high but that may be to do with being near London

Hi.

I've just traded in my 1991 "v-spec" Eunos for a UK 2000. At the time I bought my Eunos, the UK dealer did the scare stories: "we can't service it, can't get the parts, etc" After I bought it, the same dealer was perfectly happy to service it and confirmed that there were no differences. Go figure. Anyway, the only real problem was the fact that insurance was slightly trickier. Anyway, I had the Eunos from 1998 (I got it straight from Japan) until now. They're great cars. If you're ever up in Warwickshire (where I traded mine in) then a very nice BRG will be for sale for (I think) less than 3K.

Cheerio!

One of the finest affordable sports cars ever built, whether Eunos or offical UK. In my humble opinion of course.

The Mazda dealer we bought ours from had no issue selling Eunoses on the forecourt. Salesman said they were fine, and had only minor parts differences. They could help with parts, but if not, the MX-5 / Eunos aftermarket is well catered for by independents. We ended up with an official UK MX-5 mainly because SWMBO fell in love with a particular example sitting there. I would have happily gone for a Eunos though.

Can recommend mx5oc.co.uk as well. Very helpful and friendly.

If I can justify it, I will treat myself to a nice mk1 1.8i next year as a fun car / project. Might even consider flogging the bike to make room for it. Just thinking about that fast responding, feelsome steering and fantastic throttle adjustability makes me go all misty eyed even now.

Next year!!

Cheers

Down here in New Zealand we have more 2nd hand Jap imports than NZ new cars. I owned an Eunos roadster for about 3 years, it was a great car and gave me no problems. One of the only differences I was advised about was window glass which is apparently thinner than UK/NZ - never needed to test this can't confirm if true! The roads may not be salted in Japan but the sun can be very hot so look out for paint that has faded and stitching in the roof that had deteriorated.

we bought my father a 1.8 vspeceunos for christmas.a 1995 import from japan last yr. fully loaded with leather and aircon etc. for 3k. he really loves it and it appears that spares are easy to get hold of.
