I had a frustrating experience with a car dealer yesterday who seemed to think price negotiation is a dirty word. I'm after a Daihatsu Charade, which is cheap to begin with, but every sticker price has room to negotiate. Not with my local dealer, though. When faced with a brick wall, I decided he wasn?t interested in selling me a car, so I left. I know this must be a common experience, but I just could not make any headway. Is there anything else I could have done? My wife really loved this little car, so I will be buying one from some dealer. Shame it couldn?t have been a local businessman.

Have a look on Drivethedeal.com - get a price off them and take it back with you. I found this worked with Audi - they beat what was already a good price.
If they don't move on the price, leave. They should be fighting amongst themselves to try and sell you a car.

You do not say whether you are buying new or second hand.
I would check out the price of other similar Charades in the Auto Trader or at other dealers and see what prices you can get from them and then go back using their prices as a bargaining tool- as in 'I can get the same motor from Arthur Daley for 'x' pounds cheaper, heres his advert' and work from there.
If you can't find any comparable Charades for less maybe he doesn't have any room to negotiate - but I doubt it....
I would be thinking about how he might treat you if you go back with a problem after the sale goes through. Unhelpful attitudes in sales may well be passed on to Service Dept.

Thanks for the tips. I did go in armed with information from a couple of web sites, but that made little difference. Given that I could get slightly more than a 5% reduction from DaihatsuDirect just by asking for a quote, I thought the dealer might at least take notice. I would have bought from him for exactly the same price, since he?s local and I didn?t really expect to find savage discounts on this car anyway. You must be right, HJ ? his margin is too low to bargain. To answer a couple of questions: I'm after a new three-door automatic with metallic silver paint. List price is £6715. Web quotes have ranged from 6360 to 6540. I checked Drivethedeal also and saw that, not only are they offering no discounts, but the site has not posted Daihatsu?s own recent price cuts.

If there is little margin, go with the dealer for peace of mind and service, you will also reap the rewards with strong residuals when you sell - double edged sword in some respects.

Think about how much your time is worth too - on a car of this value there's a limit to how much you're going to be able to save - is it worth hours/days/weeks/ of stress to save a couple of hundred quid?
There's some value in buying locally (not sure it helps the residuals though!) and if your wife wants the car, it'll take the edge of her enjoyment if the whole thing seems difficult. I nearly walked away from a deal on my wife's current car over £25 - the look on her face told me it was best not to!!

I had the stone-wall treatment from a dealer a few years ago (on a Renault Clio) which was very puzzling at the time, then a couple of months later they lost the franchise. So they obviously knew it was coming and where not interested in doing a deal.
