saab 93 turbo problem?? - Simbad
I have purchased a 1998 saab 93 SE turbo Auto.
I think the turbo may not be working, mainly because it seems pretty under powered. drives fine, very smooth, but has no turbo boost feeling about, i used to have a low pressure 93 and it had a lot, lot more power.
Is there an easy way to check if the turbo is gone?
Is it likely that the turbo may be repairable or will it definately need a replacement if it has gone?

And slightly different question, how can i find out if it is an Low Pressure Turbo model (LPT) or the high pressure version. the log book just says TURBO SE (helpful!!)

Thanks in advance.

My partner had a very similar problem with a Tdi SAAB. Symptoms were lack of power, unwilling to rev to anywhere near the red line in any gear etc. The garage agreed that it wasn't right and stripped it all down and found nothing wrong. However, it worked better after they had it in and a thought was that maybe the Mass Airflow sensor was dirty (causing wrong readings) and that the work done may have included cleaning the sensor. This was the subject a thread some time ago and, if I can find it, I will post it for you. Good luck!

I would get the car checked out if I were you. There is a major design fault with the crankcase breather on this engine which builds up with carbon and then pressurises the crankcase. Symptoms of this are oil leaks and failed turbos. The work was the subject of a recall and you check with SAAB to see if your car has been done. My friends 93 has just expired last week because of this.

Ok, sounds like i need to get it checked and hope that it is either the Mass Air Flow Meter and check if it has been recalled.

My problem now is where to take it.
If i go to Saab they are surely more likely to know what is up with it than anyone else but will cost the earth just to get through the door.
Or i go to a standard garage and whilst cheaper they may not really know what they are looing for.
Or i find a good specialist.

I'll let you know how i get on, thanks both.

Simbad - if the dashboard has a turbo boost guage it is the full pressure (185 bhp) version, if not then the 154 bhp LPT.
