What is the best hot hatch and why in your opinion? Post here??
|
Current or classic?
Current - Megane 225, looks great, stonking performance, good refinement.
Classic - RS1600i, Golf MkII 16v, R5 GT Turbo ......
|
Classic? would have been the Mk1 1 Golf GTI if it had any brakes, so it has to be the 205GTI
Current? Citroen Saxo VTR (puts baseball cap on back to front)
|
205 GTi 1.9
Would buy one now if I could find a good, clean, unmodified and unthrashed example.
|
As standard it has to be a 205 1.9 GTi everytime.
Modified then it's either a 205 Turbo Technics Dimma or a 205 MI16

That's the point surely? The only models with unthrashed examples still left in circulation are the ones that were no fun to thrash!
Or, the ones that were genuinely good hot hatches were all thrashed within an inch of their lives because their owners couldn't resist it!

They often appear in the For sale section on the Peugeot Sport Official Owners Club so get yourself over there and so you'll be back in the land of Pug!
I also loved my old Pug 309 GTi Goodwood - not quite as quick but the extra wheelbase made the handling a little less twitchy and it was so much more practical with it's big boot

Surely that isn't current?
I think best current is probably the Clio 182, but given the choice I personally would go for a 147GTA.
|
Oh, sorry reasons were asked for:
Clio: reported to be so well balanced and fun to drive
147GTA: Perhaps the best sounding and looking V6 ever.

My 205GTI 1.9 was one of the best cars I've ever owned. It made me grin like an idiot every time I drove it!

Performance is certainly not hot, but reading the comment about the 309 compared to the 205 made me think of SWMBO's 306 1.8 SR Sedan. This pretty and inncocent looking car has precise handling, feedback, on the limit control, and ride comfort to die for. Quite unbelievable, and when we purchased it (simply because it was a very tidy known entity to serve as my wife's first car) it changed at a stroke my misguided preconceptions about cheap French junk. It also handles and rides appreciably better than the 306 hatchbacks I've driven, hence the connection that triggered me to write. Of course our 252hp/410NM chip tuned V70 2.4T is by far the faster (quite unreal, actually!) and higher quality car, but I still take the Pug if the journey's a B-road run.
|
I've never heard anything about the 306 hatch vs the Sedan but it has been said that the jetta handled slightly better than the Golf due to the extra bit of weight at the back.
|
Don't think that there is much argument at the moment - by all accounts the Clio has it, followed very closely by the Mini Cooper S.

911 anyone? :-D

You want your 911 to be a hatchback?
C'mon boys, one of you must have a Black-and-Decker ....

Mondeo ST220 - hatch - and a bif car! What more do you want?!
Clio 172 - Amazing power
RS Focus - To drive it is to do the second most fun thing in life.

wossa bif car?
|
Yes - lets all make fun of Adam because he can't type.
I wouldn't think I'd need to correct it but RF's made such a valiant attempt - I of course meant "big".
Carry on about your business - I'm off out.

I'm surprised no-one has suggested the Civic type R which seems to be generally highly thought of - though not especially by me as I do not care overmuch for cars that need to be revved hard to perform, even if that performance is impressive.
|
I would say a 205 GTi with an Mi16 conversion; but I'm biased as I've got one. OK, it does take the odd thrashing, but it loves it! Still going strong after 16 years, not a spot of rust, the interior rattles like crazy, but always puts a smile on my face.

A man after my own heart!

I thought about getting a 205 or 309 GTi, but worried about the safety aspect. Would these cars even achieve a one star NCAP rating?
If it had been thrashed, I would not be worried if the price was right. If the gearbox is knackered you can get them rebuilt better than new for not too much. Engines are more expensive, but once you have had the it rebuilt properly, you know its going to last for years. Of course you never get back what you spend on the car in the short term. But i think prices for these cars have bottomed out and will start to rise in the future.
Davemar- what have you done to your car to allow you to mount the Mi16 engine at the correct angle? I have heard of oil starvation problems problems when cornering with engines dropped in straight onto the standard engine mounts. What inlet and exhaust manifolds have you used?
|
best hot hatch without a doubt original cosworth sierra, only problem was the security as standard was useless so a lot got stolen and wrecked by people incapable of driving them properly...cheers...keo.
