Is the C class (2000-) known for drifting to the left when the hands are taken off the wheel while driving on the motorway? I tested an 18,000 miler approved used c220 cdi with new tyres and even with slight reverse camber it did it - the salesman said they all do it.

I'd say most cars drift one way or t'other when you let go of steering wheel.

i went to doctors once and said my arm hurts when I do this, he replied well stop doing it then.

Do you get my drift?

Think not in practical terms, my current car (Honda Accord) sets and holds dead straight.

Hi

We've been drving 27/8 years - always had a nearly new/new car and all cars we've driven have pull to the left to a small degree. We've always had a family sallon size acr and have had Fords/Vauaxhall/audis and now MB.

The MB did pull excessively to the left and we had that corrected on the c-class 54 plate saloon. The MB peeps give BS - whilst our car was in the garage, we had another new loan c class, it did not pull that much, but did pull to the left hands off. The steering on that was not dead straight.

The mondeo ghia we have from new failed its mot, couple years back, a suspension bush on the triangular plates had worn and the whole unit replace - the car has never bee the same again, the steering remain slightly off centre, but drives straight, but need to pull on steering slightly. The tyres wear our evenly.

Track on modern cars, esoecially MB are a nightmare - even after our mb was aligned by their so-called state of the art wheel alignment kit.

There will always be a slight drift to left, due to the camber of the road, it should drift slightly right when on the outside lane of the motorway. If it does both those things, then its safe to say its probably ok.

Depends on road camber. Try it on a flat stretch of road (they do exist!).

Lots of C-class drift one way or the other. You need a 4-wheel laser align by someone who knows what they are doing. Consider increasing the rear toe-in toward the maximum specified - this will help with straight-line stability.

If they do exist dont drive on them in the wet

merc gagrages do have the equipment - its fully trained staff they lack - otherwise there is something fundamentally wrong with the c class as i've driven two brand new mercs and both pulled to one side and both had their steerring of centre.

tyre wear is pathetic on the car.

My 1984 W123 used to do the same thing.

It's a very common problem with the C-Class they seem to be more prone to following the camber of the road than most cars.
There are several posts on the Mercedes owners group forum regarding this.
The dealer can alter your tracking to compensate but the trade off is more tyre wear.

Thanks, will have a look at the site. Should I be suspicious that the car has had new tyres at 18,000 miles? (thinking of wear as a result of wrong wheel alignement)

Well my Fiesta needed new front tyres after about 14,000 miles, I wouldn't think 18,000 miles is too bad for C-Class.
