I,ve got an Audi A4 Sport (2001) I bought it second hand 6 months ago. Within a few weeks of ownership the engine management light came on. I had this checked by an Audi main dealer - they said a new cat was required. Further checks revealed the cat to be fine. Since then it has come on several times and each time the fault is different but no actual fault exists. Can anyone suggest what is causing this - Thanks!!

Sounds crazy but check you brake lights! A faulty brake light switch or both bulbs out, can show up as an engine management light. I won't go into the reasons as this topic has been covered frequently with relation to VAG cars.

Are you saying that you've had the fault codes read after each occurence and the codes are different each time?
Do you have a record of which codes were reported?

Thanks for your responses, apologies for not getting back sooner.
Bert: As far as I can tell the brake lights operate correctly.
Kevin: With regards to the fault codes - I do have them written down (on a scrap of paper which I can't find!!) As far as I can remember it showed up a fault on different occasions with the thermostat / heating, lamba sensors (now replaced) & an air mass meter.
The technicians are baffled as to why the light keeps coming back on - HELP!

Get them to monitor the alternator output voltage.
