A few weeks ago I wrote about the £25 surcharge that I received from a hire car company when they forwarded my name and address to the Police.
So for the clearly reckless speed on 36 mph I was effectively being fined twice. The form must have taken 2minutes at least to complete. They got the wrong county and incorect post code but unfortunately the summons did reach me.
I contacted the hire company and told them what I thought of the charge which was not pointed out to me and was £2.50p short of a day's car hire.It means they make more out of processing speeding tickets than hiring cars. I have heard nothing since.
So if it happens to you facing up to them seems to work.
Susprisingly when I posted orginally most replies thought the charge was fair. If anyone out there wants me to write out their name and address for £25 I am ready to oblige.
Cheers
Peter

I was recently given a car rental agreement (from one of the 'majors') that featured a **£50** 'administrative fee' for forwarding name and address! A very nice little earner indeed!

It looks like one one of those sprat to catch a mackeral businesses.
I hired a car in Scotland on a full tank and had to return it on a full tank. I knew that if it was filled up by the well known hire car company on site the fuel cost doubled.
As usual running late, but left half an hour to get fuel in the city centre. Could I find a station, could I.......
Result, cost of fuel surcharge more than a days hire.
All this was above board and in the contract as your speeding situation was, but it does not make you feel any better!!!!
Sometimes I wonder whether firms know us better than we know ourselves.

Yes when my dad hired a Vauxhall Corsa a months ago when his car was in the garage for a week, it mentioned on the invoice they charge £1.20 a litre for the amount that was in the tank when he was given the vehicle.

I work as a mechanic for a van and truck hire co. Speeding tickets are everyday events, we just forward them to the hirer concerned (foc).
Actually, we get more phone calls from motorists complaining about "our" drivers. It seems that many of them have difficulty in driving a Luton or 7.5tonner when they're used to a Mondeo or Astra.
RR mentioned the the fuel issue. We send vehicles out with about 1/4 tank of fuel and expect them to be returned about the same. No surcharges or allowances. Just a telling off if empty and a smile if full. Very often they come back 1/2 full, so the excess is used to top up the one's that come back empty. Sometimes I find a tank with red diesel in it. This means draining the system and refilling with Derv.
I've often thought that unknown to us or a subsequent hirer some vehicles must go out with red diesel in them. In the event of the vehicle being subject to a roadside fuel check, who would be accountable ? Anyone know ?
|
"Who would be accountable?" Well I would guess that it would be up to the hire compnay to provide evidence of who put the red diesel in. If the person who was caught had filled the tank then obviously it would be down to them, if they hadn't put any fuel in then it would most likely be the last person to hire the vehicle.
Besides there would be a further problem for the hire company to worry about. That is if their vehicle is caught running on red diesel then it will be immediately impounded by Customs and Excise and essentially they will lose the vehicle until the case is closed. Even then there will be large costs involved in getting the vehicle back, if they ever get the chance to have the vehicle back.

are you saying you did not pay them?
in which case, consider the possibility that they will chase this debt later.
and consider the possibility that you may get increasing amounts of "administration charges" added.
and consider the possibility that you may get a ccj or bailiffs at your door if you persist in not paying?
so call me a wimp if you like, but i for one will not follow your example.
