Audi 80 Front Wheel Left Wheel Slips? - audi80tdi
Hi all,
I am new to this so here goes:

I have recently bought an Audi 80 TDi 1994 M reg. When driving the car, espcecially when going round sharp bends or when im turning the steering allot the front wheel feels as though it is slipping or spinning on its own accord. what could this be? I have also noticed when you put your foot down when the car is in standstill the wheel will spin more than the right wheel and the car will pull slightly to the left...but this is only when you put your foot down like a drag racer.
Does anyone know what it could be and how much it would cost?

Any info would help.

Cheers

I'm not sure this is a true fault, more the key downside to front wheel drive. FWD cars are always prone to spinning the inside front wheel during hard cornering or either wheel during rapid acceleration due to weight transfer unloading the driven wheels. The non-spinning wheel has more grip, so pulls at the steeering. 'Dragster starts' are always a good way to spin the wheels, so I'm not quite sure what you expect. If it's one wheel that spins in preference to the other when accelerating it's probably minor differences in tread depth. Cost to fix? Zero - in fact probably a bonus in reduced fuel costs by easing up on the throttle!

Hi there

I'm new to posting at this forum as well, but have spectated a lot!

I have the same problem as you. My 1993 Audi 80 2.0e has done it since I got it eighteen months ago. The symptoms are quite different to "normal" front-wheel drive torque steer and can be slightly disconcerting. The car even pulls to the left when there is no wheelspin when accelarating briskly. New tyres and tracking dont help. The steering and front suspension is probably in need of attention at the next service as the steering is getting more "wooly". Not sure if this could be a factor. Also, the engine mounts are a bit worn and had wondered if the torque reaction of the engine, which is to the drivers side, might perhaps slightly unweight the left hand wheel causing the pulling (!?).

I can't imagine that this is a characteristic of Audi 80's; I've certainly never read any reviews of the car which mention it!

Hope this helps!

it sounds fairly normal for a powerfull car, did both of you have small cars before??

one wheel will always spin up first..and the pulling you mention is called torque steer. on a really powerfull fwd car they can almost steer them selves into a ditch if your driving hard

is the pulling you describe worst in low gears? not noticable in 4th and 5th?....if so its torque steer

bad tyres and wheel alignment can make it worse though

Wheel alignment O.K and good tyres on car (Pirelli P6000). I have experienced torque steer before on powerful front drive cars, but this feels different as the car always pulls to the left. Also the car pulls even when traction levels are high, before the wheels loose traction. Its difficult to describe how the car behaves, but it is different to other front drive cars I have experienced.

Perhaps the Quattro version would have been better!

maybe worth an ask on a audi forum then??

Thats a good idea; I'll give that a try and let you know how I get on. Cheers for the advice.

For an Audi forum you might try www.audifans.net, then "Forums", then "Series 3...".

If the tyres are in good nick, then the problem sounds like a shock absorber on the way out. Also shows up as 'skippy' handling on rough surfaces.

The Audi 80s are noted for being heavy on front suspension components - mine is about to get a second set of bushes after 40k miles.

Forgot to add - costs are very reasonable if you can do it yourself. Try German, Swedish and French for OEM parts or www.vagparts.com for genuine Audi bits.

The comments about a duff shock absorber are a very valid point, however please remember that being a turbo diesel the torqe can kick in quite fiercly on accelarating round a bend. Even my nearly new A4 1.9 Tdi 130 does this sometimes.

Sounds like a tyre problem..Could be Damper but should show up on tyre tread as feathering.Ie high/low spots within several CM`s all around tyre.Unless of course you are using excessive acceleration?
