Separating the joint would not be easy unfortunately - I tried putting a new back box on the other week and it would not come apart from other end of the the centre pipes, I think only a hacksaw would do it!!
Think I'll pop into ats/kwik fit for a full new system... probably a good idea as I'm driving it to a classic Ford show in Germany in May so I want things to be ok..any recommendations for taking it for a new system? Any places anyone would recommend around Warrington/Manchester areas? ATS quoted £202...are the quality of their exhausts any good?
Cheers

the price seems high.. will advise your area soonest...

See if theres a local longlife exhaust depot in your area. Theyll custom make, while you wait, a stainless steel system with a lifetime guarantee, often for less than ATS etc charge!

further to my "hold" response, I have to say I am shockrd with Warrington and SE Manchester. I have never known an area where the independents are dearer than the chains you mention. Some of the others in the areas you want were asking £240+ ( Midland price approx £165 ). I have one more call to make in your area, unfortunately the MD is not back until Monday. Regarding longlife made to measure stainless systems, your car has 2 front pipes a twin centre box and a back box. This is complicated to make and in the midlands you would still be looking around £500 not worth it! I assume yours is an injection model as the front pipes for the carb car are no longer available. Watch Monday night!!!

Thanks VERY much for your help. I phoned a Ford garage earlier and they can get the genuine backbox and centre section for £92 all in (excl. fitting) which seemed quite reasonable to me, but the front pipes are no longer available as you say. Mine is a carb model.
I phoned a couple of companies which supply stainless system and the best price was £360 plus vat and delivery, plus I'd have to get it fitted!!
The car only really gets used at weekends/holidays and goes to a show or two, did 5K in it last year - I'm slowly doing a rolling restoration to it. One bit I'd really like to do is to get the rear arches cut out and replaced, but that is where you can start spending some money!!
I'd imagine a standard mild steel system would last a fair while on a car doing 5K a year? It gets a good blast down the mway etc. now and again and a Italian tuneup on occasion (engine fully warmed up of course!!
Cheers

exhausts rot fron the inside out. if you are doing low mileage make sure it gets fully hot. this prevents unburned engine exudate which is acidic from accumulating.ie minimum 3miles. you should get a 2 year warranty and it should last about 3 years....

You could try a google search for Granada /Scorpio
Someone on www.fordscorpio.co.uk/ may know a source of the front pipe.

I used to have the exhaust rotting from the inside problem on a Hillman Avenger which did low miles.(2nd car). I managed to improve the life of it by drilling a small 1/16" hole in each box at the lowest point when it was parked.
For mot test time, a small self tapping screw sealed the hole well enough to pass.
The amount of water etc which used to drip out of the boxes was amazing.

One garage I asked about fitting a full exhaust system said he would weld (braze?) the joints to ensure it doesn't blow as he said clamps on there own are sometimes not enough and it can blow quite easily as it is a v6 think, would this be necessary or advisable? Sounds a bit odd to me, is he talking sense?! He also said he'd do it for £150 which sounded ok to me!!

There was a thread on this forum some years back on such this subject. Apparantly the hole doesn't matter come MOT time if it's not big enough for the exhaust to noticably blow. See www.ukmot.com/6-3.asp , which says pin-holes are acceptable.
