Has anyone any experience/knowledge of the clutchless Multi Mode Transmission available in the Corolla 1.4 D-4D hatchback. I notice the economy figures are the same as for the ordinary manual gearbox, so it is obviously different from the tiptronic/auto transmissions found on many modern cars, yet it has a fully auto mode, as well as a tiptronic mode.
Are there any reports of any problems with it?

Not had much dealings with these yet, sold a few but not a massive amount. In the DVLA's eyes it's an auto as it can be driven on an auto license.
I've no idea how they work but from the small amount i've driven them they don't seem too bad although it's doesn't exactly sprint out of the blocks.
Both the 1.4 D4D and the MMT system have been used seperately in the Yaris for a while with no problems reported so i can't see any reason why this should be any different. And after all it is a toyota!

Thank you for that information. Strange that Toyota seem to be limiting the number of cars that this transmission is available with. Why not with the 1.4 D-4D Yaris, for example, or with a petrol engine in the Corolla?

I've just had a quick look on the availability system, a couple of colours are available in 5 to 6 weeks but anything else is strictly built to order.
Also car is only available as a T3 5dr. The only possible reason i can think why it's not available in the Yaris is that the corolla uses the 90bhp version as opposed to 75bhp in the yaris so it may not have enought poke to function correctly.

The 1.0 petrol engine with the MMT has even less power.

I read a test on the Corolla Verso, in a 2004 issue of Top Gear this morning, and it happened to pass comment on the MMT, which said it was jerky. It also called it semi-automatic. Why would it be classed as semi-automatic?

No doubt it will be an auto clutch manual gearbox - as seen on smarts, etc. They use a conventional gearbox but the clutch is controlled electronically. The software used to control this procedure is critical to how it performs. The smart gearchanges are slow and in auto mode it can be left hunting for gears. Audis DSG system

Yes it is a clutchless manual with the clutch being operated electronically. I haven't driven one much but it did seem to be alot smoother than the smart car i had as a demo for a couple of weeks a few years ago.
