Mark you were doing well over 140, so stop mucking about arguing about 85.5
|
|
|
do we therefore assume that at 85 mph I would not be part of your survey
I just *knew* it. Pedantic Mark strikes again.

I entered 131 plus and I bet I am the only one that has voted that legally exceeded speed limit in UK.
3.30am on Sunday morning A1(M) Birtree to Scotch Corner - only vehicle on the road and straddled the centre white line giving full acceleration to 3.8 Jaguar BiB patrol car.

I've got a Gatso picture of yours truely doing 139mph on the M5 a couple of years ago. Attending a firearms job at 2am. Travelled approx 70miles and the poor old Omega was very, very hot on arrival. (Only managed downhill with a following wind!!)

OK, So they did it safely, [perhaps).
I did rather better, certainly safely.
So why should only I be liable to be banged up to gratify various classes of undesirable anti-motorists?
Dammit!

Don't forget these are indicated speeds, not actual speeds (apart from those with a gatso pic). Probably doing up to 10% less.

That's funny...I don't remember saying that....
Ah. Mark, I wholeheartedly agree with you.....100%
Reverse that!

As you can see, Mark's right. I often do get confused!

Adam said "bla bla bla (lost the plot totally) bla bla etc waffle chitter .............."
Adam,
Now I am confused, what on earth is going on in that mind of yours - you're a rear window short of a Focus hatchback, and you think it's cool! Poor lad, why don't you launch a website called www.givemeadecentcarthatdoesntlooklikeavolvo340sal...m?
Erm, yes where was I....
I can only claim 110 (indicated) in a Xantia 2.0 16v.
H
Please note, I have never been in a Focus Saloon.
|
Hilarious H. Hil-a-rious. You'll all be laughing when I get what you deem to be a "nice" car such as a....DB9 or Vanquish.
Of course, I have a gorgeous car now...you just don't know it yet.
:-)
And I'll have you know H, I don't waffle....I babble.

DB9 or Vanquish??
Would that be the saloon or hatch?
H

Tyre iron or basball bat??
Would that be mild concussion or a good beating?

So now we know why they invented the Focus Saloon, the boot forms a handy weapon store for the psycopath in you average driver ;)
You'll be stuck for places to put those things in a DB9 now won't you.

Damn you and your answers to everything H! Damn you!
In preparation for my new car, does anyone know where I can buy a retractable baseball bat?

Very true, seems damn fast tho all the same. Funny tho how some cars seem to "settle" and feel very sure footed at 100mph+ and others seem to get very "twitchy"

Will anyone claim NEVER to have exceeded 70mph, or even 60?

I think we all know the answer to that.
I'm Not even going to mention her name. Weely I'm not.

Oi! Less of the "old" please, young man.
As to the "where", I been busy.
Not been told off for a while.
Hope this post makes up for it :)

"Where is the delightfully youthful/intelligent and plain good looking woman today? I haven't had a wonderfully engaging conversation for a good while?"
Adam, you're a charmer.
Not entirely sure, though, that youthful is an accurate tag either, though the thought is appreciated. Trying to keep it motoring, I was going to suggest something along the lines of well run-in, but that has other unfortunate connotations, so it's not really such a good idea ...

Hmmm. Motoring.
A fine example, Tax(ing) Tested. Full spec. 189,000 miles hence price.
Reason for sale - fed up of coaxing to work.

Runs? Shurely shome mishtake -- don't you mean drive? ;-)

I am one of the 11 (so far) people who have admitted to more than 121 mph. It was not long after getting my Leon, and a berk in a 3-Series had been very aggressive at the start of the motorway - he apparently couldn't wait the extra 5 seconds for the second lane to appear, and overtook with about two inches to spare on the just-widening single lane. For some reason, this annoyed me and I thought "Right, you cheeky xxxx, I'm having you", and chased him for nearly a mile. I had almost caught up with him when I glanced at the speedo and saw the needle glide from the 115 to just past the 120 mark. I immediately let my foot off the loud pedal, having decided that Mr Impatient could be caught by the cops if he liked, I wanted to keep my licence.
I have never done anything so stupid before or since, and feel slightly embarrassed that I was so easily provoked. At the same time, whenever I remember the incident, that feeling has admittedly always been slightly tempered by the pleasant surprise and inappropriate pride that my humble TDi turned out to be so capable whilst carrying three adults and running on a fuel made from recycled cooking oil.

My statement (yes, statement not admission) of 121-130 mph was in a 3.6 litre V8 Sunbeam Tiger on the M45/M1, and it was perfectly legal and socially acceptable. Some people either don't know, or can't remember, that there wasn't always a speed limit on urban roads.
Until they were banned from doing so, car manufacturers used to carry out high speed testing on public roads.
Also, I remember a newspaper report of racing driver "Dizzy" Addicott doing in excess of 200 mph on the M1.
In those days, if there was someone in the outer lane holding you up (whatever their speed) it was common practice to flash your headlights to get them to pull over ~ and it was very rarely resented by the slower driver. Truly the good old days!

Similar situation.though on M20..I wanted to strangle the guy driving. He cut me up several times.ie let me overtake didnt see the signs at first he was playing around..As dangerous as it was at the time.I did see red(I know I should not have done)I had at the time Rover 827 si manual..I put my foot down to catch him..got a surprise when I flew past him.it was BMW after all.My motor thrashed the BM But had to do in excess of 150 mph.to do it.As the reading is wrong I think more of 145 is likely..you would be surprised at handling of rover at high speed..though not recommended

I have briefly shot beyond the 130Mph on many occasions of late night driving along one of our two motorways across here in NI, (we only have about 25 miles of motorway either side of the city) but that was in the days when the policing budget was overstretched trying to counter terrorism, making traffic policing a lesser priority and lessened the liklihood of being detected.
Did this in two motors - the impreza which was doing gallons per mile at that pace and my current, humble Leon TDI.
Interesting to hear your admission Andy, as Sean laughed when I posted this comment in this thread which mentioned my turbo failing at 130 Mph.

BTW Andy did I spy you leaving the crisp 'n' dry refinery on Friday afternoon minus one headlamp????

"BTW Andy did I spy you leaving the crisp 'n' dry refinery on Friday afternoon minus one headlamp????"
Yep, that was me! I'm usually there on either a Thursday or Friday afternoon. I noticed you waiting to drive in as I left, since as your car was identical to mine apart from the general tendency towards cleanliness. I don't care, I have an excuse - it's dirty because I haven't washed it.
Had spotted the faulty headlamp that morning, but only made it into the motor factor for a replacement today. Having always laughed at "all the plonkers blissfully driving around half-lit", it feels odd getting flashed at for being one bulb short of a full beam, so to speak ... had to laugh when someone did that to me today with just one dipped light and (snigger) one front foglamp.
Sound like your turbo has been less fortunate than mine - I'll be keeping it below the ton from now on! Especially on this side of the fence - down in Mexico the run from Dundalk to Dublin can be done in 35 minutes now.

Just for the sake of clarity, is that because you cannot so claim, or decline so to claim?
;-)

If I was being pedantic, I'd say that anyone could so claim, and that surely your intended question is presumably whether they coud claim truthfully. But I won't be pedantic ;-)
Anyway, I answered 71-85, cos I frequently exceed 70 when overtaking.
Like many others, I tend nowadays to accelerate up to the high 70s when overtaking in the outside lane, because otherwise there isn't time to complete the maneouvre before some bullyboy shoots up my tail, flashing his lights cos I'm impeding his desire to do 90mph.
Not ideal, and I wish it wasn't necessary. But if middle-lane traffic is crawling, I've learnt the hard way that life in outside lane at a legal speed is likely to be short and uncomfortable. I reckon it'll remain so until the limits are enforced, regardless of whether they are raised.

I've listed my (speedo indicated) 140mph in the poll - it was on a n almost empty M50 one morning whilst on the then new Citroen XM launch (it was the V6 version we were in).
At the time I had fleeting visions of a police helicopter trying to keep up with me overhead but, in actual fact, I was actually trying to keep up with another motoring correspondent (now sadly no longer with us) as we had forgotten the route map and were following him.
Fortunately none of us were nabbed - to h--l with those that disagree....:-)
I've often done well into three figures on race tracks and airfields though....:-)

Between should really read "From.." (and, if necessary, "to").
Mind you, 71-05mph is slowing down...:-)

"Between 71-85mph
Between 86-100mph
So, between = "not actually but just slightly over/under ?
For example 2 is not between 2 and 3. It can't be between two points, it is on top of one.
Therefore, if I was doing 85.5 mph which speed bracket above should I choose ? 85.5 is not between 71 & 85 because its actually more than 85 and therefore out of that range. On the other hand, its not between 86 & 100 because its less than 86 - do we therefore assume that at 85 mph I would not be part of your survey."
My solution would be to round the speedometer reading to the nearest whole number, which I think is reasonable given the inaccuracy of most speedometers. If the reading were, say, 85.493 I would round this to 85, and if the reading were, say, 85.507 I would round this to 86.
Problem solved! ;-)
