Peugeot 106 Diesel starting problem - Janeo
Hi - I am having real problems starting my 1995 106 Diesel on cold days - it has never been great at starting in cold weather, but now it refuses to start at all some days. The glow plugs were all replaced about 3 months ago, and the battery is nearly new, so I don't think these can be the problem. I have checked for air in the fuel lines, so this is not the problem either - help please! also, can anyone recommend a good diesel specialist in the Reading/Berkshire area? I don't know an awful lot about Diesel engines and don't want to get ripped off.

Thanks in advance!

Although the glow plugs have been changed are they getting 12V from the plug relay unit. Regards Peter

As Peter says, is the glow plug warming up light showing on the dash when you switch on the ignition? If not the relay (or wiring) may be faulty.

SWMBO's cat had this problem: traced to loose wire attache dto relay. Retightened it and solved it...

Check that the earth strap from the engine to the bodywork (or even back to the battery) is firmly attached and not corroded. This has to take quite a heavy current when the glowplugs are working properly. My ZX wouldn't start when the garage that had done some work on it failed to tighten the earth strap properly.....

Janeo,

My 142k M Reg one suffers the same problem. I've read that diesel engines rely on good compression to generate enough heat to start, so the more worn the bores, the harder it is to start.

Despite renewing the glow plugs recently one could have gone open circuit - test by disconnecting the glow plug feed wire (watch out the screws are fiddly and easy to drop), then run a short wire with a bulb in line, from the battery positive to the top of the glow plug. If the bulb lights the plug's OK, if not it needs replacing.

One thing that helps is to turn the key til the glowplug light comes on, wait til it goes out then switch off (i.e. don't attempt to start). Repeat that once, then on the third cycle finally turn the key all the way to run the starter, the idea is you're warming up the glowplugs.

Can you garage the car? That will help.

If it's any consolation I've found if it refuses to start at 8am, then by midday it will start because the air temperature has risen.

Stokie.

A penny-pinching tip is to only renew a failed glowplug, not all 4, IMHE they work or they don't and renewing a working one doesn't put off the day it will fail! I have to renew about 1 or 2 a year.
