A friend bought a 51 plate Almera 1.6 with aircon and 34k on the clock last week. I suspect he paid over the odds for it. I'd be interested to know whether he did so because of some reason known only to himself, or whether all the cars at this particular showroom are over the odds.
To avoid any flavour of bias, I won't yet reveal what he paid, or where the car was from. Could you let me know what he ought to have paid? This is purely for my interest, and for me to know that I am right (!) - I shan't be letting him know, as he is happy with the car so far.
Thanks,
O

Looking on the Autotrader site, 2001 Almeras are going for between 3 and 6 thousand pounds...
But, if your friend is happy with his purchase then surely the garage had the vehicle priced correctly.

my gut reaction is about £3.5k to £4K - you can buy a new almera for about £8k

Pre-reg 54 plate 3dr 1.5S with aircon are available for 7k (new-car-discount). Cargiant have 53 plates (10k miles) for 5.5k. So I'd say a reasonable price for a good 3-yr-old 34k 3dr 1.5s would be 3.5k.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone paid >5k though. Certainly I'd expect a Nissan dealer to mark it up at 5.5-6k, hoping for a mug to pop by, thinking it a good discount on the list price of 10k.

Trucko's point is fair enough - that is why this is for my own info only.
Judging by the response, he paid more than he needed to, or at least, could have got 2 years newer for the money.

HJ's latest news shows uk-car-discount offering the 1.5S 3dr brand new for £6600. Wow. There can't be a bigger bargain than that in the UK presently. Pity I don't need a new car.
Anyone actually got one of these almeras? Are they really so bad?

I've had a couple of cooking Almeras (don't know if they have updated the models since then) as hire cars and they were perfectly worthy vehicles. Not my cup of tea, but as medium sized transport, can't be faulted.
A friend (co-incidentally, the same one mentioned in the Skoda thread...) used to have an Almera GTi which was very good indeed.

Rule #1 never reveal to a friend what price you purchase a car at. Often hear people trying to justify their choice of car and the price soon after purchase.
If your friend is happy thats fine as so will be the dealer, everyone's happy! Don't ruin a friendship by pouring scorn on his decision to pay over the odds.

No - as I said in the original post, this is only for my information, and so that, next time I look to go to buy a car, I can avoid a place that seems to charge over the odds. I'm really very insecure, and have to be proved right. Mrs O says it's because I'm a man.
He paid very nearly enough to get a pre-reg 54 plate. In line with the name/shame rules, I shall only say it was from a supersite near me that is not currently reccomended by HJ.
Moral of the story - do your homework, or ask a friend to go with you...
Incidentally, Mrs O's MX5 (subject of discussion in May)is going very well indeed, and has clocked up about 6000 miles with no trouble whatsoever. Only cost has been 2 new wiperblades.
