Drove from the midlands to my parents' in Hampshire tonight. Normally when I d this on a Friday night it can take anything up to about 4.5 hours and is a complete nightmare. Today I left Cannock at about quarter to five and was sat eating dinner with the family at half past seven. The reason? Cannock is right by the M6Toll and I went on it for the first time tonight.
It's great! Particularly the free-for-all as you approach the booths, and the game to chuck your coins into the basket and not miss... and then the grand prix style exit. Great!
So you people who complain about stealth tax, more roads etc... you continue to sit in the queues on a Friday night, please, and I'll quite happily pay my £3 to get home hours sooner than normal.
Now....if they could just extend it so that it bypasses the roadworks on the M42... :)

Yes its fabulous, high speed as well!
It jammed up one evening i was on it though, the fee went up from 2 to 3 pounds and people didnt know how to play the throw the coins game

agreed. i find it refreshing to see so many cars and trucks, seemingly more than 50%, go straight on to the toll-road that i always end up wondering if i have mistakenly heade for the toll road. the traffic just clears and i have a pleasant drive down the m6/m5 and then the m42/m40 saving me at least 40 minutes every time compared to before the toll road opened.

Wishing toll roads a success is akin to a turkey looking forward to Christmas. The better they work, the more likely they are to be extended to all roads, then we'll be back to square one only having to pay for it.

i managed from the center of manchester to rose hill in oxford in 2hours.
but make sure work pays the toll.

I managed Telford to Poole in 3hrs 30 yesterday without using a single toll road.
I *may* have gone over the speed limit once or twice though....

While I agree is does ease the journey, I know someone who lives very near to it and she tells me that everyone around there hates it. It's ruined some nice countryside and is very intrusive in the way it was built.
Personally, I'd rather have seen more done to upgrade the existing motorways, although I can see that it is useful to have a completely separate alternative which makes it easier to close bits of the M6 and M5 to work on without causing too much disruption.
Or, alternatively, as my MD likes to point out, they should have had the sense to build the M6 there in the first place rather than running a motorway through the middle of Brum...

We in the south have the pleasure of the 'coin throwing game' for a number of years now in the Dartford crossing. When you miss it does cause some fun as you try to get out of your car in the narrow booths to retrieve your coin!

Another good game is seeing how fast you can approach the Dart Tag booths without slowing down before the barrier opens. In Italy this can be achieved at around 50mph on the Autostradas.

Yes, the M6 Toll is a great timesaver. Will use it tomorrow when I go to sunny Bootle first thing.
Only trouble is getting a receipt to claim the cost on business expenses. Trying to spot a manned/womaned kiosk as you approach is difficult. The signs are far too small to spot at a safe distance. Lots of my colleagues agree and we're not all blind!
