Chelsea to Stansted - Help! - drbe
Can anyone offer advice please. I have a customer who wants to be driven from Sloane Square to Stansted Airport at 10am on a weekday.

What is the best way to go? Presumably not through the City to the M11. Possibly Edgware Road to A41 to M1 to M25 to M11?

I may even very, very politely suggest a black cab to liverpool Street and then the Satansted Express.

Suggestions gratefully received.

Depart at 10am or arrive at 10am? Departing at 10am should be no problem, from Sloane Square go to Hyde Park Corner, up Park Lane, you will need to use a bit of Edgware Road if you want to avoid the congestion charge otherwise use Oxford Street then turn up the A41, follow it up to Staples Corner and join M1.

Or maybe head south to the embankment, follow it all the way round towards Tower Bridge, then Aldgate Circus, go out on the A13, pick up the NCR and join the M11 that way - will involve CC but is probably shorter.

Wouldn't know about the dubious pleasures of driving through C.London on a weekday at that time but I do know that there are major roadworks affecting the M25/M11 jcn which IIRC will still be in situ. I did the Stansted run from Jcn 4 of the M25 a few weeks ago and it was a nightmare pretty much from the Dartford Crossing. It was a bit earlier in the day (07.30) but what's normally less than a 1 hour journey to over double that time in the end. I wouldn't want to risk it without leaving extra time - better to be a bit early than miss a flight! HTH.

Tube/Taxi followed by Stanstead Express.

There is a WORLD of difference between the state of the M25 at 7.30am and at 10.00am. All the traffic seems to disappear at 9.00am but then gradually builds up again throughout the day, until around 3.30pm - 4.30pm when it starts to get as bad as in the mornings again. Unless there's an accident somewhere, which there invariably is these days.

I would suggest your route is probably as good as any, although consideration of the A11 (or is it 12?) to M11 might be worthwhile.

I think. I would be inclined to travel south of river. ie work toward A102 go on it. should take you to Junction3/4 of M11. as its against main flow that is the way I would go..Your way sounded long winded..Though its hard to judge traffic at that time. I would suggest giving more time?

Use suggested route to M25 via Edgware road then th rt past Lords Cricket and Swiss Cottage, A1 A41 A1 to M25. Make decision on state of M25 at South Mimms. If OK travel East to A10, go North on A10 (new bypass section is now open and very quick,) and then A120 to Stansted. It may be longer but plenty of alternatives if Motorways get bad. M11 M25 junction is traffic works nightmare!

My personal choice would be tube to Lvpool St and Train!

Thank you for the advice, I have suggested to the potential passengers (American holidaymakers) that a black cab to Liverpool Street and then Satensted (I think I meant Stansted - although Satensted might be more appropriate) Express would be cheaper, quicker and more certain, even if this does stop me earning a few pounds.

nightmare route, against commuter flow?

I use the last section, - 33 miles of A10 A120 VERY regularly as the alternative to M25 - M11. Much better, and if you use the back way into the airport via the Hilton Hotel you can catch planes while 80% of the passengers are stationary at the M11 junction to A120. (altho this is not now such a great problem as it use to be with the opening of the A120 entrance).

The M11 - M25 road works or any M25 section are a nightmare and can easily make you miss a plane!
