Vectra void bushes? - rickt
I bought a Vectra 2.0DI [r reg] in July 03 after my Astra had a rear end bump and I decided to take it off the road .Now , the Vectra has all ways had a rear end knock especially rear drivers side , and I had thought the back end had dropped an inch or so. Anyway I asked the local garage about the problem and they said there was nothing wrong and it always passes it's MOT.Since reading an earlier post a few days ago regarding knocking and Dynamic Dave giving some excelent links on the void bush problem, I am beginning to think this could be the problem. How would I know ?. I had noticed if I drive over a bump the back end seems to rock from side to side slightly .I've been to the local accessory shop today to price the bushes and ask about the tool required to do the job . But, I'm thinking it could be suspension or something else. To avoid wasting money , how can I check whether there is something else wrong and not the void bushes?

rickt,

The first I knew one side of mine was worn was when the rear tyre on the worn side started wearing on the inside edge. I had the part worn front ones put on the back, and the same thing happened again. When I placed my hand on top of the tyre, I could also feel a clunk/knock when the back end of the car was shaken from side to side. I jacked the car up and got a prising bar between the arms of the multilink suspension, but everything was solid as a rock. Local Vaux dealership confirmed my suspicions that the top bush (of the two) was shot. Although I don't know how they tested it.

ps, how many miles you got on the clock? Mine failed at 40,000 miles, but I've since read that they can fail as early as 20,000.

It's got 89k on the clock. So , do you think I should change them in any case ?

I don't really want to commit myself and suggest that you change them only to find the knocking is still there afterwards.

You say that the garage doesn't think there's a problem, what I would suggest is that you get a second opinion from another garage.

In the meantime:-
1. Are the tyre(s) wearing abnormally?
2. How much did you get quoted for replacement bushes? They're £15.22 each (+p&p I would imagine) from www.autovaux.co.uk ( www.autovaux.co.uk/StockItem.asp?AVCode=AVSS&AVNo=...1 )

The guy at the accessory shop also suggested taking the car to a dealer to have it inspected .But , I'd rather just replace them myself. Prices quoted , main dealers =about £40 each , local shop =£18 each but ,I've managed to buy 2 from e-bay for £14.99 plus P&P following advice from one of your links . Many thanks.I think I'll get another two bushes and change all four for good measure . All I need now is the removal tool .Yes , theres even some of them on e-bay too ! Thanks for your help
