Road Tax morals - David Horn
I'm currently at Uni and I have my car with me (handy for carrying t'bike up to the Pennines). Quite a few other people brought their cars with them - the majority untaxed.

Now, I have a strong aversion to ratting people in, but if one of those crashed into me, would their insurance be invalid if they had it? Or, more importantly, if they don't have tax, will they have insurance?

What would you do in this situation - just sit tight and hope they never bump in to you?

If the Excise Licence for a vehicle expires then it does not invalidate the Insurance.

However failing to renew Excise or use without on a road tends to indicate that finances are somewhat strapped which means there is the possibility that there is no Insurance in force for the vehicle. Further indicated as this document is required along with a current MOT Certificate, which could also be defunct, to obtain a Licence.

You can go to the DVLA site on the Web which gives you way to report unlicensed vehicles but I like the suggestion seen elsewhere to make a sticker up from your PC and stick it on the offending vehicle as a warning.

Have you tried raising this point (anonymously) with the Student Union and the campus authorities?

I wonder what their response would be?

HASAWA may apply here.

With the recent SORN (statutory off road notification) regulations DVLA will probably catch up with these people before long. DVLA now chase up any owner who hasn't either retaxed their vehicle or declared it 'SORN'.

The reminders will most probably get posted to their parent's house, so mum and dad can nag them during the weekly phone call.

That's taking the broad assumption that all students are young people just away from home.

Personally I'd shop them, student's today have it way too easy, not like in my day. Back then I had to get up before midday on a few occasions, and had a Govt. grant paying for all my food and accommodation. Terrible times they were. I was over £800 in debt when I left Uni.

They may not get picked up on SORN if either:

they have SORNED the car

they are not the registered keeper.

In my day the great subject of debate was how to get the most from the DSS. Now that it is difficult if not now impossible for most students to claim on the DSS, it seems that the great debate is how to avoid running costs of the car.

6. How do I report an unlicensed vehicle?

If you wish to report a vehicle that appears to be unlicensed, the details should be sent in writing to your nearest DVLA Local Office. This may be done anonymously.

The details must include:

* the registration mark;
* location of the vehicle;
* the make/model, colour;

wherever possible, please provide:

* the time it can be seen on the public road;
* name and address of the owner;

The information provided can then be used for further investigations by an Inquiry Officer who will make a formal sighting of the vehicle and complete a witness statement.

You may also send the details by e-mail to: unlicensed.use@dvla.gsi.gov.uk

I say shop them, if they cant be bothered to tax it can they be bothered to insure and MOT it?

The DVLA's computer is completly hopeless, as it keeps sending out fines to car owners that have SCORN'ed thier cars ages ago.

I've got a neighbour who litters our estate roads with his car sales stock, making it difficult to park on our street. I take great pleasure in reporting his untaxed vehicles to the local police on a regular basis!
