Don't look a gift hourse in the mouth when you see something you don't quite like about this site.
In response to a previous thread that has now been locked, I cannot understand why people log onto a website (that has been set up for their benefit at no charge to them, provides them with serious money saving advice and a great chance to discuss all sorts of issues) and just critisize it publicly!
I think its right that constructive critisism should be channelled via the correct sources - e mail to HJ, Mark, DD or No Dosh (for light amusement whilst in the hard shoulder perhaps :) ), but to critisise it publicly, to me smacks of a lack of gratitude to those named above plus the many people who regularly make valuable contributions. It's like colleagues in the workplace standing up and critisising each other in meetings, when a quiet chat over a coffee would solve the issues.
I was taught as a youngster to be grateful for whatever was offered to me with good intentions. I never had to accept it but a polite no thank you was the order of the day should I choose not to.
When clicking on this site I do sometimes find things that don't suit me 100% but this doesn't detract from the enjoyment and value for (no) money that I get from it. So I stick with it and am public with my praise and discreate with my critisisms -when I have any.
Sorry if that sounds a little sanctimonious. It's just that I don't like to see peoples' voluntary work being picked to pieces.
Just let's support this site and see it grow. If there are issues such as banner ads that offend people, then as DD etc has said plenty of times before, e mail HJ or any of the mods with any concerns.
Good, got that off my chest!

My personal experience has been that I am almost embarrassed by the amount of benefit I consider that I have derived from this site, compared to the modest offerings of advice etc. that I have been able to contribute in return.

When you make a contribution, an unlimited number of people can benefit from that, so you are probably one of many that benefitted from each contribution.
This week I have sorted out my insurance broker and fixed my PC thanks to this site, and it's only Wednesday!

I agree.
I've had advice on coping with a difficult dealer, on improving my driving, on auction prices, on the best car for my purposes and lots of general knowledge and entertainment. On holiday last month I was able to decline the expensive CDW insurance because I'd bought an annual policy recommended on this site.
There are about six sites I visit regularly, of which this is one.
PS. Thanks to everyone for your advice and input!

Hear, hear to all the above.

Agreed.
I was going to offer a thank you to everyone who posted in the Ebay thread earlier. Very interesting and informative it was. But I didn't want to take away any of its momentum so I held back. Now this seems like a great opportunity. Not just that, but the whole site though... the forum and other features like the CBCB and HJ's aution reports. They all make great reading, and I'll never be able to put back into this place what I've already had from it. Kudos to HJ and the mods.

Couldn't agree more with all the above. I've had some valuable advice and great entertainment from this site over the years and I hope I've been able to put just a little back into it.
Well, that's about to end as today is my last day in gainful employment so from now on it'll be the occasional visit on the slow dial-up line from home. Once we've moved house I'll get broadband (if rural Dorset knows of such a thing!) in and I'll be back in full flow.
Until then, thanks to HJ for providing this resource and to all the BRers for all the help.
As Al Dvorin might have said "terryb has left the building".

Well said Hugo - my sentiments to a T. Just one addition we should all make a resolution to click on at least three adverts everytime you log on. Will make all the difference to HJ who we have to remember is not a charitable organisation with unlimited funds..

I must be soooo sad - this is one of my favourite sites.
A good read.
Good advice.
Can save money.
It's free.

SWMBO uses IE with her homepage as the Daily Torygraph (how much longer before the on-line version becomes a pay site?). I use Firefox with HJ as MY home page!. H.J site is also a link to the UK, now that "home" is elswhere. Great site - keep clicking the links"

I'll try to click on a few.
Must admit though, that most of my clicking is being done to shut the annoying Nissan advert which comes up with every page: go onto a few pages and there's a dozen of the things on your task bar!
|
I've just shut 43 Micras... that's another ad. that has put me right off a car.
|
I don't get the Micra ad in IE 6 (install SP2) but I do get the cool butterfly ad. This results in 30 seconds of gazing in wonder at the screen and trying to work out how to do something similar on my site.
|
No sign of anything here (Win98SE/IE6 with Norton Ad Blocking. At work (NT/IE5.5 and whatever security my employer uses) they came up as blank www.honestjohn windows. Only picked up Micra as the culprit when the other, now locked, thread appeared.

Agreed!
No HF waffling this time, just - agreed. Best site I've ever visited, by a million miles.

And I keep clicking on the technical section hoping that I might be able to help someone in return for the help I have received - haven't managed much so far, but it isn't for want of trying!
