First of all, I've been watching for a few weeks now, and would like to thank all of you for sharing your knowledge, wisdom and wit.....
After the birth of my second son in March, I'd like to replace our Peugeot 406 estate, and rather like the look (and price) of the Citroen Picasso.
I recently bought my Focus TDDi at BCA in Blackbushe, and was impressed with the ease of it all, and the great prices. Therefore, I'd like to buy my new Picasso there too. Does anyone know any rough prices, as Auctionview shows what's coming up, but not what things sell for. For example, I know that loads of Picassos went through today in the Citroen sale, but an idea of prices would make my planning much easier.
I do work in Farnborough, not far from Blackbushe, but can't spare any more time off work for 'homework' at an auction.
Many thanks in anticipation

Basically you pays yer money and takes yer choice. At a sale in Westbury this week there were Picassos ranging from £4,000 for leggy Y plate 1.6 LX models to £8,800 for an 04 HDi Executive with 3k miles.
You will need minimum of SX spec if you want air con.
Typically a 1.8SX, 52 reg 10k miles around £7k, HDi about another £1500-£2000. You definitley pay for your diesel economy with these cars.
With Citroen's flexible pricing policy and free insurance offers dealers are reluctant to touch just off new cars as there's no margin betwen them and brand new from Citroen dealer.
Look out for Motability sales to ensure guaranteed mileage and full service history.

Thanks for that - as HDIs can be bought new for about £10k, there seems little point in risking an auction - so maybe a visit to my local Citroen dealer this weekend......

Those prices suggest that a Picasso. kept for a year, must be about the lowest-depreciating new buy in that size. It makes the econonomics of a VW etc look a bit sick

Surely another 406 Estate would be a better value, lower priced, better buy? I don't know what you can fit in a Picasso that you can't fit in a 406 Estate.

These two might help a bit.
I'm after the same vehicle, though my head says a Focus estate would do just as well!

Average BCA prices of ACTUAL sample sold....
1.6LX 01 Y
£4525 18k miles
£4377 27k
£4252 35k
1.6LX 52 02
£4833 16k
£4729 24k
£4533 34k
Best later vehicles would be within Motability fleet sections - as proclaimed by HJ, recently.
Also seems to be LOADS of Zafiras around - again in Motability, thought of one of them??
& as for 406 estate, I've been looooooooooong considering one, as replacement for my Maestro van - but just you try & find a NICE one..............

not worth buying a picasso at auction
all highish prices.

Agreed. Went to Paddock Wood BCA in Kent today. The Picassos were as follows:
2.0 HDI 51 23247m - £6200 (not sure if it was LX or SX)
2.0 HDI 02 27394m - £6575 (ditto, sorry)
1.6 LX 51 15443m - £4800
1.6 SX 02 23359m - £5825
2.0 HDI 51 22000m - £6250
1.6 Desire 04 2503m - £7400
These were all ex-motability. Same sale had a load of Zafiras which seemed better value, though they were mostly the 1.6 Club which is less well specified than the average Picasso. And looks like a hearse. Scenics were a similar set of prices to the Picassos.
Ian Shipton has lots of motability Pics and his prices aren't much different from the above once you add on the premium paid to the auctioneers (how much is for BCA by the way?).

I was at paddock wood yesterday. On a 5k car premium is about 200. On a car we bought for 14050, premium was 298 i think, on one i bought for 2350 came with a premium of 130. THere is a simple formula for working it out which i have forgotten. Just ask at the cash desk.
There were a few cheap cars there yesterday. 98R bmw 535 auto with leather, only 75k but 10 stamps sold for 6400. Fiat coupe 20v turbo 98R 44k warranted with history a mere 3100. A 127k miles 96N Prelude v-tec tempted me, but was a bit scruffy and had a little bit of rush in the arch and a bent bonnet, but still looked cheap to me a 1075 (a and it came with some tax)
Did you happen to see what the old silver E34 535i made i missed it?

"Did you happen to see what the old silver E34 535i made i missed it?"
No, sorry, I was only interested in the Motability sale, I got all the prices of those if anyone's interested in specifics (lot of Astras, Scenics, Zafiras and Picassos). Didn't see many bargains there, apart from a 1 year old Megane diesel with 10k on the clock which went for 3750 dues to a bit of scruffiness. I'm looking at spending 5-6k on a mid-MPV and it looks like I'll save maybe £500 by buying at auction. Which leads me to the question, exactly what would I get from a dealer in terms of warranty in exchange for that extra £500?
|
One thing to bear in mind when buying an older Picasso is that the HDi engine does occasionaly have problems with the diesel pump. The cost to replace this can run in to four figures.
Added to the additional cost of purchasing a second hand diesel, that extra 15mpg can soon look expensive.
The petrol engines are smoother and quieter and while they may not have the torque do have better performance figures.
If you are buying an older Picasso and don't plan on doing lots of miles then the petrol engined models make a lot more sense.
|
I'd come to the conclusion that the diesels were overpriced. When I was little, it was "known" that diesels go on for ever whereas you were lucky to see a petrol with 100k on the clock (or unlucky, rather!). Nowadays it seems to me that petrol engines go on for a lot longer, so I guess the difference must be due to fuel economy?
Anyway, I only do about 6k a year so not worth it for me, I'm after a 1.6SX.
I've seen on auctionwatch that there's a massive Citroen section at Measham BCA on friday. Very tempted, there's about 40 Pics on there. But I'm bit worried about the provenance of these cars - will they be the lemons Citroen want to get rid of? Or are they likely to be just as good as Motability ones?

On a branded sale, such as this, the vehicles will be ex.manufacterers fleet = daily rental/demonstrators/factory & office staff cars.
If you're REALLY keen, you'll be bidding against main dealers, predomenently, so a TRUE value of the cars should show through. After all, they OUGHT to know what they'll sell on for!!
As for 'lemons' Ford did have a policy of declaring what the vehicles were returned for, the only company to do this IIRC.
As for buyers premiums, you'll always pay more than a BCA account holder. But if you were to buy at Manheim Auctions, you'll pay MUCH, MUCH higher add on costs.

That's interesting, so they should be pretty good cars on the whole; they'll have had privileged access to servicing facilities. Looks like a trip to the midlands is in order then!

theres an even simpler way - have a friend who works at the auction house and get them to give you the print off of reserve prices - give you plenty of laughs to how people pay well over the odds, especially this time of year.
