Hi,
I recently had my rear wheel bearing changed on my Renault Megane 1.9 td. I discovered a squeek over the weekend so removed the wheels to add some grease, (which the garage didn\'t do).
I\'m come up against a slight problem. When putting everything back together, I realised that I don\'t have a torque wrench to check the bearing bolt was set correctly. I have tightened it by hand but have been informed that if I have over tightened it, (which I think I have), I can cause some damage.
Is this true. Does it really matter how tight the holding bolt for a wheel bearing is. If so, is there a way I can guess the torque without having a wrench.

Not sure if its a taper bearing or not
Roller bearing hubs generally need torqueing up very hard. IIRC, the one car I've done this on was 180lb/ft
Taper bearing hubs need torquing up, generally* not much more than finger tight. So long at it is tight enough to avoid any wheel play, then generally* its tight enough.
But why not take it back to, or at least call the garage that did the work?
Both types are often held in place with an additional locking mechanisim such as a split pin or locking washer.
*Generally, generallisations are dangerous :)

Dezzy,
I was in Lidl's last Thursday and they were selling torque wrenches. They were pretty substantial ones and so they will go pretty high, but not sure if it is as high as 180ft/lbs.
Lidl have special offers that arrive on a Thrusday around here. Can't remember how much it was, but sort of £15 or £20.

Was it single press fit type. or 2 taper bearings ie inner/outer. I doubt single if you managed to grease it as they are sealed units. but not knowing the car?
