CD Changers with FM Modulator - Number_Cruncher
Wise forum,

In order to keep SWMBO quiet during long journeys, I am looking at fitting a CD changer to our Mk IV Astra.

I'm quite keen on keeping the standard fit radio / cassette, so I want to fit a CD changer which will plug into the aerial lead.

Questions:

1) Has anyone had any experience of the Kenwood KDC-CMP59FM CD/MP3 changer & modulator?

2) Are there any units where the main unit can sit in the boot, and the modulator sits behind the radio - i.e., so I don't have to re-route the aerial lead to/from the boot?

3) Is skipping while going over those occasional ;-) speed bumps a problem? If so, during the install, is there anything I can do to help the situation?

Many Thanks in advance to all who take the time to reply,

George

As I understand it, the modulator turns the CD changer into a weak FM radio brodcast station. You then tune the radio into the frequency that the CD changer "broadcasts" on, and listen to the CDs. When you aren't listening to the CDs, the radio signals from outside pass through the CD changer unchanged.

This is why I am keen to find out about routing the aerial lead around the car.

I have used one on a 10 disc Sony CD-changer, they are ok but it will only be as good a listening to a tape or radio station.

The main problem is you have to have a separate remote for the cd changer.

Hence, I bought a head unit which had CD changing controls.

Hi

I've got one of those little fake cassettes that feels the signal from your CD-changer/walkman, or whatever straight into your tape deck. Again, the quality may be limited, but you don't get any interference!

You can get them at lots of places, including Maplin www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?moduleno=27793

May look a bit to conspicuous for the likes of SWMBO, though.

From experience they can sometimes pick up interefence from the electrics (e.g. indicators).

You need to be careful with this approach as some factory-fit radios don't have a standard coaxial aerial connector that these modulators need. If the unit it integrated into the dashboard then this may well be the case.

Dear all,

Thanks for your feedback - I'm going to give the Kenwood KDC-CMP59FM a try.

I think the radio in the Astra is a fairly standard, DIN fitting block, so it should have standard connections on the back - i hope!

I will post back once I have got it wired in and let you know how it went.

Cheers,

I'm pretty certain these FM reciever things are now illegal.
