Audi v Vauxhall service costs ? - Dr Phibes
Hiya !

Currently have a Vectra 2.0 GLS and I'm changing to an Audi A4 Avant 1.9 TDi (130) (2002 spec).
Can anyone tell me what diffence there is in servicing costs. I expect the Audi to be more, but by how much ??

Many thanks

I would expect that it depends on which part of the country you are in for a start.

If it's any help, when I moved from a Rover 623SLi to a Lexus IS200, my servicing costs at least doubled (and that's being generous!).

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but how about we ask the nice Mods if we can create a database of hourly rates for main dealers up and down the country. We all complain about how much we are fleeced for main dealer servicing. Perhaps if we pool our experiences etc, we can point Back Room members towards the most satisfactory dealerships (or specialists) in their areas.

Our Audi dealership in charges servicing at £86/hr + VAT, and the average service price for an 02 plate A4 for the "Inspection service" is about the £250. An 02 plate TDI will be on the Long-life service program, which means it is service on demand rather than fixed interval. Typically that means if you do mostly town mileage about 16,000 miles and if you do motorway miles it will happily hit 22k or more between services. I can't remember off hand how much the "big" services are I'm afraid (they alternate with the inspection, so 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc are big services and the cambelt is at 80k on that engine I *think* but check your manual)

May be of some use

Need not matter that much anymore. I'm pretty sure I read in the press that the law has changed so that manufacturers are now obliged to honour warranties even if the vehicle has not been serviced by a franchised dealer.

This is of course provided that the service schedule has been adhered to.

Tom

Hmmm. Sure I've read something about that in the papers too. That should help everyone if that's the case.

Cheers !

Thanks Chris,

I've just had a "full" service done on the Vectra at the cost of £175 so a leap up to £250 for a basic service isn't so bad. I generally keep cars for 3 years then change them anyway. That coupled with the fact that I probably will only do around 10k a year, shouldn't be too outlandish.

By the way, I discovered whatcar.co.uk a few hours ago and they are quite informative about costs etc and they say :-

A4 Avant 19.TDi (130)
Service costs(£) 3 years £750
Service Intervals 24 months or 19000 miles
pence per mile 46.17

onto a typical NEW Vectra
Service Costs(£) 3 years £770
Service Intervals 20000
Pence Per mile 49 !!!

So it seems it'll be cheaper (on paper) to own an Audi !......

Yes, of course it will, not

Don't believe anything you read in the stats section of What Car. Any relation to the truth is purely coincidental.

For example they say Toyotas have 20000 mile service intervals, whereas its actually 10000.

Perhaps Dr Phibes and I can compare notes in the future.

I collect my new A4 Avant Tdi 130 in early September. Who cares about the cost - it's a nice car.

Out of interest, as it will be often used on a SW France to SE London commute I'll check out French servicing costs.

Report to follow later.

You don't have to justify the choice to buy a new car DE.It's your money and your decision.

You can't take it with you.

I must not have been clear in my post. It wasn't an attempt to justify the cost, I thought I was proudly proclaiming that I don't care what it costs if I want it. I work hard, make sure my family and those I care for don't go short. I've ticked the right boxes for pensions etc....nearly finished funding private education (x2),don't owe a penny on credit cards, mortgage (sorted in 14 years) or loans - it's mine and I enjoy spending it.

Absolutely Dulwich Estate !

Incidentally, I took on board what has been said in an earlier post about not placing any faith in WhatCar.co.uk so I looked in depth on the Audi.co.uk site. It says that the 4 cylinder Diesels are serviced at 24 months/30000 miles for the main service (dependant on how you drive) and 12 months/20000 for the normal inspection service.
I am awaiting a call from my local Audi dealer to confirm the prices of each of these services and the price of changing the timing belt.
I'll post the outcome here.

and here it is, direct from my local Audi dealer :-

Basic Service interval is 24 months and the cost of basic service is around £260. They then say that a brake service (brakes & fluid etc) is due every 24 months at around £85. The big service is every 40,000 miles and STARTS AT £300. Cam belt changes come in at £390 for belt pulley and tensioners etc.

Hope this info is as useful to others as it is to me.

Thanks guys

Supply and fitting of new front brake pads on my petrol A4 (same pads as diesel??)was £132 about 3 weeks ago when the little light came on telling me something was amiss. Cost of pads was about £60, Labour same + VAT.

I did get to read the Times, Telegraph and Mail. Had two cups of coffee too.

If you want an Audi serviiced at a main dealer it will be megabucks, however there is always the independent route. I have been running 220 mercedes for a while now and never been near a main dealers. Service tyoe 'b' at the local dealers is around £350. The same job at a highly competent local garage is £200, they have all the right Bosche equipment for the diagnostics too.

So many more of us will go down this route when we feel confident about the warranty being upheld.

Does anyone have the real facts about non-dealer servicing and warranties still being honoured? Does this raise the question: manufacturer one year warranty + dealer two years not now as good as manufacturer only three years?

My A2 TDi is due for its first variable service after two years and 26,500 miles. Rang my local dealer - cost of service including all parts, labour and VAT - £207.07.

My previous car was a Focus and would have had two 10,000 mile services by now - almost due its third at about £150 each - so £450.

Our smart will by ready for its third service at a similar mileage - two A serviecs at £130 and a B service at £200 - total £460!!

So in terms of servicing the Audi is the cheapest car I've owned.

My local Ford dealer (Burns Congleton) has flat fixed rate of around £110 per service on all petrol Fords(diesels are more).

Anything much more than £150 a throw (Subaru £350) and it's a ripoff making Mr Brown look like a miser:-)

Just had my Toyota Avensis (2000-2003 model) serviced (4 year, 40000 miles) at a Mazda (ex Toyota) dealership in the North West the other day, whilst on holiday in the region.

The service was £115 and the MOT £42.

Cheap I thought.
