Anyone with good ideas how to keep car upholstery looking as good as new (apart from getting seat covers)? My new Fiat Panda has great yellow upholstery (sounds a bit odd but it isn't) but I'm a bit concerned about how long it will stay looking good! Thanks

It's fabric, I presume. Deal with any stains immediately with one the many products available for that purpose. Otherwise, brush and vacuum regularly. And I'd get it professionally cleaned every six months, or more frequently if you're that concerned about it. It probably won't cost that much and you can relax and be assured that you're doing the best for the car, perhaps getting the outside super-cleaned at the same time. A comprehensive mobile cleaning job costs £50-ish around here and the results are never less than very pleasing.

"My new Fiat Panda has great yellow upholstery" - an oxymoron?

You just have to be careful, and when it starts to look like it could do with it, hire a shampooing machine from Homebase or somewhere, they have rug doctor ones, they have an upholstery attatchment. I cleaned out my car apart from the leather seats, and the colour of the water was disgusting when tipped out of the waste side of the machine. Buy your own carpet shampoo to add to it, as the stuff they sell you with the machine is a rip-off, just say you have some left from last time, and get 5 litres for £5 from B&Q, or Vax stuff from Wilkos. They all work as well as each other.

Guy in sunday times motoring section today raised exactly the same question but in his case "to cover up the disgusting yellow upholstery"

Walser seat covers was the answer

Get a couple of aerosol cans of Scotchguard and give all the upholstery and carpets a spray as per the instructions. Once treated, you can just wipe stains away with a damp cloth. If you spill anything, it won't soak in either.

Its the same stuff that Supagard use, and dealers want £200+ for it.

If I had car upholstery that colour I'd pray it went as black as possible in double quick time...:-)

You'll probably find the mousse type the easiest to use. You can get these and similar upholstery cleaners in the discount stores - they do exactly the same job and can cost as little as 89p a can. No point in paying extra just for a brand name.

Thanks for all your comments (complimentary and otherwise!) and advice. Actually, it's really nice to have the interior bright and cheerful instead of a dull boring grey that seems to be the only option in every other car on the road these days. The new Panda is a great car (inside and out) and thoroughly recommended!

Tesco Window Cleaner. It really works! Got half a bottle of suncream out of my upholstery without leaving a mark.

Blimey! I did idly (and guiltily..) wonder whether I'd ruined your interior. Glad it worked!!

Nope, it was brilliant. The day after I used it my car was on display at Beaulieu at the Southern Counties RS Owners' Club rally (they had invited a bunch of BMW, Alfa and Peugeot drivers along) and it won best car on stand, partly I'm sure due to the spotless interior.

The fact that it broke down on Monday is entirely unrelated.

Pleased to say that it's now fixed. Dodgy RPM sensor/sensor lead off the flywheel.
