I have just had to take my car into a Renault dealer as I could not open the bonnet(as suggested by the man at an AA Service Centre). They subsequently charged me £97.10 which involved £6 for oil and £77 for one hour of labour!! Does this sound excessive and is it the going rate for a Renault dealer?

The oil sounds quiet cheap...

Don't know if it is correct or not, but I think it is excessive. Unless your car is covered by a manufacturer's warranty, I would steer clear of any main dealer. They don't always do a good job in any case. You need to find a good independent garage. We use one for our Citroens and he can deal with most things. His labour charge is under £30 per hour.

Bazza - I bet the £6 relates to the three drops of 3 in 1 they needed to free the mechanism!

Bazza....were you the mechanic cos you are dead right!!

The hourly rate at the main dealer Vauxhall garage I use is £55 + vat, which equates to near as damn it £65.

When the 7 broke down in France, the AA 5 star involved garages which were Renault dealers. Standard pricing on the wall was £ 22 or 220Francs. This was about 4 years ago! At that rate, quick holiday in france, save a fortune, come back with some wine & a TAn!

Sounds about average for main dealers. £60 - £75 an hour is where it's at for Peugeot and VW dealers too. As they (say they) don't make enough money on new car prices, something else has to pay for the lovely chrome and glass buildings they sit in

if no price was agreed beforehand, I think I am right in saying that the eventual price must be reasonable (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) - Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982?
I certainly wouldn't say that £77 was a fair price...

Renault owners who live in the south of England and visit France by sea or EuroTunnel often get their cars serviced over there - labour charges are apprently between one-third and one-half of those in the UK.

True, and the same applies to Germany. Its all those 'social costs' we hear so much about that make it so cheap.. LOL!

Surely anyone brave enough to take on the challenge of keeping Renaults on the road deserves that sort of money :)
