I have a problem with a BMW 330D 2000 Model.
Divers side electric window is making a strange metalic noice when selected down. If the window is stopped at the mid point there is about 3 inches of up and down play.
Just wondering if anybody can give me any pointers as to what could be going wrong, or if anybody has ever come accross this defect before?
Is it safe for me to open the panel up and have a look as there is an airbag at about hip height, and I don't want to set it off. Can I isolate it in anyway?
Thanks for your help.
Will.

I would suggest that the metal wire which pulls the window up and down has fallen off one end of its runner, and is no longer wrapped tightly around it's pulley but is scraping against one end of the runner itself - which would explain the slackness transferred to the window itself.
Firstly i wouldn't use the window, or you risk having the window stuck open if the metal wire comes out of the runner completely.
It may be a very easy problem to fix yourself, once you get the door panel off, but i wouldn't go playing around there until you are sure it is safe with respect to the air bag.

If there's a multiplug between the door pillar and door that you can pull apart, then separate it and leave overnight (preferably 24 hrs). That *should* be long enough for the air bag capacitor to discharge itself so you can safely remove the door card.
I've absolutely no idea if this'll trigger an aribag fault that'll need resetting afterwards or not.

It sounds like you need a new window regulator. The airbag is not a problem. To avoid putting the airbag light on unplug the connector at the airbag itself with the ignition off, (and do not turn the ignition on with the bag unplugged). You do not need to wait before unplugging the airbag. The hardest part of the job is taking the door membrane off without tearing it.

I would disconnect the battery and leave 30 minutes.
