Peugeot 405 td - duggie
I have a 96 pug td with 141,000mls, had the car about 6 wks, the car is very sluggish you have to put your foot to the floor to get any real response, you can feel the turbo coming in so l dont feel thats at fault, l've just replaced the cambelt so the timing is o.k, could the problem be injectors blocked? or the pump, any advice please.

I would try injector cleaner first off, try getting millers cleaner if possible as this is the 'most effective' I have found.
If there is still no real difference you can increase the fuel and/or boost. Most likely however is injectors and filters. Have you drained any water off the diesel filter? Might be worth cleaning / replacing filters as well.

these are pretty sluggish motors in 1st and 2nd gear ,turbo should kick in around 3000rpm,could possibly be dirty air filter(this makes one hell of a diff)

Air filter has been replaced, need to check fuel filter, only reason l posted this message is that l've had other 405tds and they've never been as sluggish as this one, almost feels gutless at low speeds going through the gears, l know their never going to break any speed records, but it should respond better than it does. This one is fitted with a lucas pump, other 405s l've had have been fitted with bosch pumps.

i know a way to improve fuel settings at www.streetracing.co.uk look at the 306td pages, same engine and also covers the lucas pump as well,my bosch pump is brill compared to bloke over the road ,lucas pump.mines more speedy at start off

An air leak at the fuel filter causes sluggish performance - best to replace with a steel bodied type not green plastic Lucas item.

Using an injector cleaner would be a good idea - most effective if you drain the fuel filter and add cleaner there rather than dilute it with gallons of fuel.

Could also be that some boost pressure is leaking, the 'D' gasket between intercooler and manifold have been known to fail. Also check that the pipe between manifold and the boost pressure fuel controler is sound

At the mileage it's possible that the EGR valve is sticky and the engines getting too much exhaust gas at high load which will reduce power and cause smoke.

best of luck

You mention EGR valve where is the valve located.

The EGR valve is mounted on the back of the cylinder head towards the bulkhead...should be a convuluted stainless steel pipe between the valve and a take off on the intake manifold (on the right side as you look into the engine bay). Some earlier 405's dont have EGR fitted.
Don't remove the steel EGR pipe connector unless you have the right tools to get them back on again.
