Peugeot 406 Coupe Mileometer Fault - DKR
I've got a X reg 406 coupe thats done 52,000 miles. Yesterday with no warning the mileometer reset itself to 180,000 miles and is increasing as normal from this point (now up to 180,072). Has this happened to anyone before? Does anyone know how to return it to its correct mileage?

Thanks for your help!

Hi

Never had one do that before, You could try a dash board re - boot before you ask a Peugeot dealer.

Peugeot dashboard re - boot:

1: Find the fuse box inside the car.
2: Find the Red & Black fuse with "SH" in white letters on it.
3: Start engine & let it idle.
4: Remove the above fuse for a minimum of 10 seconds.
5: Replace the above fuse.
6: All the dials should go to maximum reading for a few seconds, then go back to normal.

Try that first & see if it fixes it.

Thanks - I'll give it a go. Spoke to a Peugeot dealer over the phone and he hadn't heard of it either - haven't taken it in yet though so I hope this works!

Cheers

Hi

The re - boot is normally the fix to a sudden dead dash board, never tried it on one that has added lots of miles on its own.

A new set of clocks is around £500 from the dealer, If the re - boot doesnt do the trick, Have a look for people who can change mileage readings in back of car magazines, exchange & mart & such to see if they can sort it, Cheaper then the Peugeot dealer.

hi there
i work in a peugeot main dealer as a technician and this is a known fault with 406\'s after 1999,it can be caused by using incorrect spark plugs i.e non resistive ones or by bad earth points inside car you will need to replace the instrument panel and the bsi unit as the milage is stored in both units and fitting one without the other will just transfer the high mileage to the new part . i have known a few people get the milage put back to the correct figure by one of the mileage correction people (if you can remember the correct mileage before the fault appeared) if you do this there is a chance it may happen again though as peugeot changed software in later versions to make them more stable.

Hi

Thanks for your reply you are the only person I've spoken to that has heard of this fault before (including Peugeot)!

I'm a bit concerned that the fault can be caused by incorrect spark plugs being used. I know the plugs were changed at the last service (by a Peugeot main dealer). Is there any way to prove that they used the wrong type as this would make them liable. Also have you any idea how much it is going to cost to replace the instrument panel and the BSI unit - it sounds expensive!

If I had the mileage re-set by the mileage correction people is there a risk of damage to the dash / internal electric system etc..

Sorry to ask loads of questions - any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Again!

hi there
its unlikely the peugeot dealer would have fitted the incorrect plugs as they have a system called laser that informs the parts person of the correct spec for your car and also all the plugs fitted to peugeots are resistive anyway so if they were say the wrong heat range they would still be resistive.
its more than likely a software fault not helped by poor earth points in the interior of the car.
the people that i have known who have had the milage put back to where it was have had no other problems with the electrics afterwards.
i think from memory the cost is in the region of £600-£700
for the whole job (your main dealer needs to configure and initialize the new parts on their diagnostic system)
hope this is some help
ps dont remember how old your 406 was but it may be worth giving peugeot customer relations a ring as i have know them to make a contribution to the cost if correct plugs etc had been fitted
cheers and good luck

Hi mate,

Regarding fitting the wrong plugs,

It really is worth checking, we had a 2000 3.0 in for the same fault. Checked the plugs the first bank was all new Peugeot plugs, but the second bank (obviously coundnt be bothered to change them) were NGK which Peugeots dont like.

I personally think the Peugeot dealer who completed this job should be closed down!!

Hi

You guys really seem to know what your talking about. Im looking at buying a 1998 406 coupe with 57k on the clock. It seems to run ok but one thing I noticed was the display on the mileometer and the radio was very dark suggesting maybe the bulb has blown on both. I heard its caused by jump starting the car and that its not a serviceable item. What do you think?.. and is there anything else I should look out for as I have never owned a peugeot before?

Thanks in advance

Richie
