Toying with idea of a used Porsche 911 - I have 15K to spend - what can I expect for that sort of money or should I lower my sights?
I need a car suitable for everyday driving so reliability is important.
cheers

Martin:
I was recently helping a young lady in exactly this situation. She wanted one to take back to New Zealand. We found the following company very helpful, they had several 911's in stock of varying prices.
www.classic-chrome.co.uk
They're based in Mortlake SW14.
Good luck

Still looking.
A couple of thoughts people had made me look at the Testarossa again, and I have to agree, its probably too wide to drive comfortably wihtin the UK. So I am trawling web sites and making phone calls.
Its surprisingly difficult to do this remotely.
Also, SWMBO is threatening dire things if I can't find a safe way to put a child seat in, even if its in the passenger seat. Life !
I am expecting to be in the UK in the next few weeks and intend to spend a lot of this time pursuing the right car.
If I wanted something to stick in the garage and use one sunday a year and then sell, there would be no problem, but trying to find the right one to use as an every day car is tough. I think nobody does this. Personally I am full of admiration for those of HJ's neighbours who take the kids to school in a Ferrari, I intend to do the weekly shopping in mine.

Can access web site ok now - thanks!
Seems as though 15K doesn't buy you much on the 911 front though... :-(
|
If you can stand LHD, import one - My mate 2 doors away got a 1993 911 from Belgium for 13K - he also imported an A class merc at huge saving over list price, says it is a doddle. Also he says the Belgians look after their 911s very well.
I'll ask him for more info he's gone to the Hare & Hounds, and I might just get a pint too if I dash off now......
|
the best way is to search autotrader.co.uk as you can do a nationwide search. up north, you can buy a late 1980's 911, for about £12K, and in scotland i have seen early 1990's 911's go for about £14K.

i forgot to say, are you prepared to travel, as a local company in newcastle upon tyne, is selling porsches, the company is called jct 600.

Martin,
I owned a 911 Carerra 3.2 1986 (early clutch) I bought second hand from Chaplegate an official Porsche dealer in Dorset, you pay a little more but get a very good warranty, however, the 3.2 is now dated for the OPC to sell, suggest you join the Porsce Club of Great Britain they have a WEB site and plenty of members cars for sale but take your time in choosing, no love at first sight. There are plenty of specialists around (where do you live I can mail you some) but beware if not chosen correctly they can be a minefield, but get a good one with plenty of credible service history and you will have fun, even gulvinised they can corrode especially if accident damage has been bodged, I am no expert, however, I owned mine from 1996 to 2000 and had no serious problems, it is probably the last of the basic models not much electrics to worry about, coupled with plenty of companys dealing with spares etc etc. Shame just traded mine in for a Boxster, but I wish I had the 911 as well. Please feel free to make contact.

Richard,
Thanks for your reply - I'm based in central Scotland - do you know of any specialists here?
Also - what's the web site of the Porsche Club?
thanks

You can get a very nice Mk IV Supra for £15K. Performance very adequate, Toyota reliability, and it's safe to go out in the wet!
|
I wouldn't mind, but they keep getting stuck on the rocks.

Try looking in the back pages of the more upmarket classic car magazines. I am told that the 911SC (1977-83) is the one to go for at around £15K - mechanically simpler than the later and more powerful cars, but 204BHP is plenty to play with. They have a fully galvanised body unlike earlier vehicles, and don't usually have the giant spoilers and other tacky aerodynamic add-ons that later Yuppie-era 911s have.

|
try 'the independent porsche enthusiasts club, the website is www.tipec.org.uk i sometimes see nice 911's go for about £15K, most with full porsche history.
