My VW Golf Driver 1.6 G reg started making a knocking noise on the motorway whenever I went over 60 mph,the noise was coming from the front somewhere.Later,it seemed ok at high speeds in a straight line, but when I took roundabouts,a heavy grinding noise started. Its now an intermittant grinding/clunking noise ,mainly at low speeds,on corners. My mechanic doesnt seem to know exactly what it is,but he said 2 of the engine mountings had gone anyway, which may or may not be what the problem is.If it is a front wheel bearing, how do I check for sure?Someone told me that with front wheelbearings you dont check for wheel play, which is what I thought you did.Recently replaced cv joints, and about to replace front and gearbox engine mounting, but it seems unlikely that they would make a grinding noise.Any help much appreciated.

Hi there. My 1990 1.6 driver has started doing exactly the same thing. Did you get to the bottom of it? Regards Tod.

Hi Tod,yes eventually the mechanic found the problem,it was a loose anti vibration damper which was moving around,I think its situated on one of the drive shafts, and mechanic just used some silicone to glue it into place, its been fine ever since, hope this helps.

Thanks Tony, I will give that at try this weekend and may well change the engine and gearbox mounts as well. Regards Tod.
