motorway vibration - vw passat - turbo11
my vw passat has been suffering from a vibration at motorway speeds(70/75 mph plus)which is felt through the steering wheel. It does not go away at higher speeds, but dissapears as soon as you drop below 70.
I have re-balanced the wheels,fitted 2new wheels,checked wheel bearings for play,checked track rod ends.Dampers seem ok.
Below 70,the car drives and handles perfectly, but as most of my driving is on the motorway it is driving me nuts.
VW main dealer not helpfull at all.
Any bright sparks out there got any ideas?
Any help greatfully recieved.

Maybe too much play in the control arm bushings? Allowing them to oscillate.
Common problem I think.

I had a very similar problem on my BMW 318, had the tyres changed, blanced and aligned still no soloution then we dig deeper and find play in control artm bushes....

You don't say you've changed any tyres and I had a very similar problem last year starting at 65mph and getting progressively worse as the speed increased. The cause was old'ish tyres (3+ years) slightly out of round. I suspect they were old "new" stock when they were sold to me. A new set of tyres fixed the vibration immediately.

How about balance the wheels ON the car, rather than off?

& swapping wheels around/front too back?

Might be an obvious one but:
When the wheels are put back on, are the nuts being cross-tightened? I had this symptom once on a car where this hadn't been done.

Just a thought steering column to rack universal joint?

Assume all four wheels have been balanced and not just the front.
motorway vibration - turbo11
all 4 wheels are new and two of the steel rims are as well. The vibration was there before the new wheels/tyres were fitted and still is.I have swapped all the wheels around on the car-alas no improvement. There doesn't seem to be any play in the suspension or steering. The car went to vw 3 times-they acknowledged the problem but couldn't (be bothered) fix it.
I don't know how you can balance the wheels on the car for motorway speeds ?

Interesting-just jacked up the right front and there is quite a bit of movement in the damper top mount.Did the same with the left side and ther is no movement. Are the top mounts fixed as normal or do they float when the suspension is on droop?????
